Once colonised by the Romans, the Turks and the French, the country has emerged from the troubles of the 1990s to reveal itself as a destination of unrivalled scope and grandeur. Amongst the vast sands of the Sahara it is home to some of the most beguiling oasis towns in the region; dominated by ancient Ksars or fortified strongholds, the mud brick villages still hold on to traditions that have endured among the desert sands for centuries. It can also boast a number of world heritage sites such as the spectacular ancient UNESCO sites of Djemila and Timgad as well as the medieval desert pentapolis of Ghardaia, while its bustling capital, Algiers, offers the traditional Casbah experience counterbalanced by a wonderfully engaging mix of Ottoman grandeur, colonial chic and modern vibrancy.
This remarkable journey takes us into the heart of this unique country as we journey from the shores of the Mediterranean to the edge of the Sahara and witness the stunning total solar eclipse.

As an overall ethos, wherever possible we aim to use characterful accommodation that enhances the overall travel experience, not just offers a bed for the night. This can obviously vary dramatically from country to country and from trip to trip.
On this trip we will stay at comfortable hotels in all locations although please note that service levels in many Algerian hotels are not yet on a par with what would be expected from comparable hotels in Morocco or Tunisia. Day 1 Tour Starts In Algiers
The tour starts early this evening in the Algerian capital. Overlooking the waters of the Mediterranean, Algiers began life as a Phoenician trading post, but it was the 10th century Berbers under Bologhine ibn Ziri who began the city’s rise to prosperity. Over time it fell to the Almohades, the Ottomans and the French, before a bloody struggle for independence finally saw the Algerians wrestle control from their colonial overlords in the early 1960s. Much of the historic heart of the city dates back to Ottoman times and includes the impressive facade of the Ketchaoua Mosque.

Day 2 Algiers - Ghardaia: Casbah, Corsairs and Conflict
By way of an introduction to this fascinating country, we’ll start with a tour of the oldest part of the capital, focussing upon the historic Casbah, one of the most impressive in all of North Africa. This UNESCO World Heritage site was described by Le Corbusier as "a masterpiece of architecture and town planning" as we’ll discover after wandering around its labyrinth of narrow streets and alleyways, made up of tiny shops, museums and market traders. Later we’ll visit the imposing Maqam Echahid (Martyrs’ Monument) and the National Museum of El Mujahid to learn about the Algerian War of Independence. This evening we will transfer to the airport for our flight to Ghardaia, 600km south.
Please note that depending on availability we may overnight in Ghardaia town or in a more remote guesthouse within the Beni Isguen palm groves.

Ghardaia lies in the heart of the traditional homeland of the Ibadi Muslim sect, and is today part of a preserved piece of medieval splendour, made up of five fortified settlements that occupy the highest hills in the valley, each one crowned by a lone towering minaret. A distinctive blend of white and red buildings, these snapshots in time still retain the customs and traditions of a culture that has endured since the Mozabite Berbers of the 11th century, providing us with a unique insight into a way of life that can trace its ancestry back a thousand years. During our time here we will have the chance to explore some of this remarkable valley, paying visits to a number of villages including Beni Isguen and Al Ateuf (the oldest of the fortified settlements), as well as stopping off to wonder through the markets and palm groves of the M’zab Valley.

Day 4 In & around Ghardaia: Palmeraies and Markets
With a full day for exploring the pentapolis of the M’Zab Valley, we’ll learn more about the Mozabites and their houses that lie scattered around the hilltops and which seem to almost fuse with the surrounding landscape, with their courtyards and terraces picked out in white against the brilliant blue of the desert sky. Each of the villages follows the same principle, with the houses being built in concentric circles around a central mosque and minaret, which are then in turn protected by high walls and ramparts. Originally, these villages were fed by a unique water distribution system that was devised by the Mozabites themselves to capture rainwater and divert it to the oasis by way of underground tunnels. Despite living very traditional and conservative lives, the Mozabites remain highly innovative and control much of Algeria's commerce today, making them a fascinating ethnic group to meet and learn more about.

A day’s drive through the desert today will take us past endless sandy plains where dunes occasionally encroach onto the road and green palm groves indicate oasis settlements. We’ll pass Berber villages as we head north east through the desert to El Oued, the City of a Thousand Domes. Surrounded by sand dunes, the city is characterised by its thousands of white washed domes sat atop the traditional buildings helping to cool the inhabitants from the harsh Sahara sun. The traditional neighbourhoods feature narrow streets and shaded alleys and the market is full of local produce such as dates, handicrafts and textiles.

We will explore the desert early this morning heading out in 4x4s before the heat of the day; taking in the shapes and forms of this incredible sand sea with its epic dunes. Returning to the hotel for breakfast we will then explore the souk located in a traditional building and a busy centre in the town. After lunch we will continue on our journey and as we reach Biskra we will make a stop at the mosque and mausoleum of Sidi Okba. One of the oldest Islamic monuments in Algeria, it was built to house the remains of Uqba Ibn Nafi who led the Arab armies to North Africa.

Heading north east this morning we’ll stop to explore the impressive Ghoufi Canyon with its welcome oasis and troglodyte dwellings before continuing onwards to the UNESCO Roman ruins at Timgad. Sometimes referred to as the ‘Pompeii of Africa’, this vast site was constructed under Emperor Trajan as a military base to defend against the Berbers. After the Vandal invasion in 430AD, Timgad was destroyed at the end of the 5th century. Centuries later, Timgad still represents the embodiment of Roman urban planning and is considered, along with Djemila, to be one of the Maghreb’s undisputed treasures of antiquity.

Day 8 Timgad – Constantine: Total Eclipse
Day 8 Timgad – Constantine: Total Eclipse
We plan to re-enter the site at Timgad this morning to witness the total eclipse. The partial eclipse will begin at 08:51 and last until 11:22 with the total eclipse happening from 10:01 until 10:06. In the afternoon we’ll continue our journey north to Constantine or ‘Cirta’ with its dramatic setting amongst precipitous cliffs and deep gorges. The French writer Alexandre Dumas called it ‘a fantastic city, something like Gulliver’s flying island’. Founded over 2,000 years ago, a plateau surrounded by deep ravines was a great place to build because the city could be easily defended. Since then Constantine has outgrown the plateau and spilled over into the adjoining areas, connected to the old city by seven high bridges, hence the title ‘City of Bridges’.

This morning we’ll drive a short distance north to the small Roman ruins at Tiddis. Also known as Castellum Tidditanorum, it’s perhaps Algeria's most impressively located Roman site. Originally believed to be a Berber/Amazigh settlement, Tiddis is an oddity in that it’s made up of winding pathways that climb the hillside to which it clings, as well as paved streets, a temple of Mithras, an impressive arch, cisterns and a small forum. From here we’ll drive back to Constantine for lunch before heading out on a tour of the city. Constantine boasts an excellent museum noted in particular for its Roman mosaics, as well as the delightful Palace of Ahmed Bey, a handful of impressive mosques (including the impressive Abdul Khader mosque, the second largest in the country), a traditional casbah with its local market and of course, the architectural triumph of the city’s bridges for which it’s so well known.

This morning we will head to the impressive ancient Roman city of Djemila, a UNESCO World Heritage site considered one of the finest in North Africa. The wheel-rutted streets of ancient Cuicul, founded by the Emperor Nerva to house his subjects, are lined with elaborate houses, a forum, basilica, triumphal arches and temples. It is a fascinating example of Roman town planning adapted to suit its mountain location. Equally impressive is Djemila's stunning museum, where every square inch of the immense walls are plastered with mosaics. After wandering around this charming site we’ll return to the hustle and bustle of the capital Algiers. Tonight we’ll head out into the city for our final dinner of the trip.

Hotel El Aurassi boasts views of the Bay of Algiers from its higher floors and Luxury rooms. With over 400 spacious rooms and suites, the bigger-sized hotel benefits from a large outdoor pool (open from June to September) with an outside brazier; three restaurants serving Algerian and International cuisine; a coffee shop, tearoom, lounge and winter garden; tennis and squash courts; and a gym, hammam and sauna. Guests can experience a bit of the Algerian high life at Aurassi which utilises opulent, Middle Eastern designs.
Hotel M'Zab, Ghardaia
Located just a short walk from Ghardaia’s thriving market, the Hotel M’Zab offers a convenient base for exploration of the M’Zab Valley. Renovated in 2021, the hotel once served as a French prison during the colonial era. All 98 rooms have balconies, and guests have access to the impressive pool within the hotel’s inner courtyard.
Trajan Hotel, Timgad
The 20 room Trajan Hotel is perfectly located next to the Roman site of Timgad, offering simple rooms that are light and spacious with en suite bathrooms, dark wood furniture and local textiles. Guests can enjoy meals in the restaurant or the café.
Novotel Constantine, Constantine
One of the best hotels in the city, the Novotel Constantine offers travellers an excellent location in the heart of Constantine, close to the Bey's Palace, the Cirta Museum and the iconic Sidi M'Sid bridge. The 117 rooms are all ensuite with mountain or city views however amenities are minimal and the rooms and furnishings are starting to feel a bit dated. The buffet restaurant serves international cuisine and there is also a bar and a fitness centre.

Total Solar Eclipse
On 2nd August 2027, North Africa and parts of the Middle East will witness a rare and spectacular total solar eclipse, with up to 6 minutes and 23 seconds of total darkness—making it the longest eclipse visible from land this century. As the moon completely covers the sun, daylight will turn to twilight, stars may become visible and the sun’s corona will glow in the sky. This dramatic celestial event will be visible across much of the region, with ideal viewing conditions expected due to the region’s typically dry summer climate.Responsible Travel

Supporting Algeria
With its vast desert sands, Algeria is the second largest country in Africa. It is also one of the least-visited and as such the tourism infrastructure is in its infancy. By visiting Algeria, Wild Frontiers is slowly trying to help to build the tourism market, with all operational costs going directly into the local economy. This in turn generates tourism-related employment and supports the local communities.
On this tour we use local ground handlers and employ local guides and drivers. Wherever possible we stay in locally-owned accommodation, eat in locally owned restaurants and purchase supplies from markets, meeting people along the away and learning more about day-to-day life, particularly in the remote oasis towns and villages. The wonderful thing about this kind of interactive tourism is that everyone gains – the communities financially and us with the wonderful welcome and experience they give us.
We are also promoting the ancient heritage of Algeria through visiting the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Djemila and Tipaza Ruins. UNESCO Sites are chosen by the UNESCO committee and must "bear a unique or at least exceptional testimony to a cultural tradition or to civilisation", "an important interchange of human values" or be outstanding examples of major stages of Earth's history or ecological and biological processes in evolution. Visiting such sites helps protect them for future generations to come.

Day 1: Algiers – Tipasa – Oran: Leaving Algiers this morning you’ll drive to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Tipasa on the Mediterranean coast. Considered to be one of the most important archaeological sites in North Africa, this old Roman port rose to prominence under the emperor Septimus Severus (AD193-211), and provides a remarkable collection of Punic, Roman and Numidian temples and monuments. You’ll also visit the nearby Royal Mausoleum of Mauretania. This imposing tomb is the final resting place of Berber Juba II and Cleopatra Selene II, who were the last king and queen of the ancient Kingdom of Mauretania. Later you’ll continue west towards Oran, Algeria’s second largest city.

Day 2: In Oran: After breakfast you’ll head out on a guided tour of Oran, the original home of fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent. Oran has a significant Spanish flavour to it after more than two centuries of occupation before the French took over in the 19th century. You’ll have time to take in the sights and sounds of this historic city, visiting the major sites such as Place du 1er Novembre, Santa Cruz fort and chapel, La Cathedrale du Sacre Coeur and the Bey’s Palace.

Day 3: Oran – Tlemcen – Oran: Near to the Moroccan border lies the old regional capital of Tlemcen, famed for its Moorish architecture. After a drive that will take around 2 1/2 hours, you’ll discover the impressive historical legacy of Tlemcen including the Mechoaur complex, the 12th century Mosque of Sidi Bel Hassan, the 11th century Grand Mosque of Tlemcen, the 13th-century ruins of ancient Mansourah and the Sidi Boumediene Mausoleum. You’ll then return to Oran.

Day 4: Extension ends in Oran: The extension ends today with a transfer to Oran’s international airport.

For this tour, UK passport holders currently require a visa for Algeria.
Non-UK passport holders or non-UK residents should contact the relevant embassies for individual requirements.
Passports should ideally be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the end of your tour.
Please note that passport scans are required to book the domestic flights and organise your Letter of Invitation.
You will require a Letter of Invitation for your Algerian visa application. Please note that Letters of Invitation can only be issued when pre and post tour arrangements are booked through Wild Frontiers. Algerian visas require authorisation from the Ministry of Algeria before they can be issued. This can be a little unpredictable in terms of timeframes so we strongly recommend that you apply as soon as possible (no earlier than 3 months prior to departure) once you receive your Letter of Invitation from us. Due to these variable timeframes, we also advise against making any foreign travel plans for at least 6 weeks prior to the tour start date.

are applying to as your visa is stamped into your passport.
NB. It should also be noted that anyone with a passport showing evidence of having been born in or having visited Israel (including having entered or left Jordan/Egypt from posts which are known to border Israel) is likely to be denied a visa for Algeria.
VACCINATIONS & ADDITIONAL TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
There are no mandatory vaccination requirements for travellers to Algeria. For any clients transiting for more than 12 hours through an airport/country with a risk of yellow fever transmission you will require a yellow fever certificate.
For all destinations, please make sure you are up-to-date with any standard vaccinations (e.g. MMR, Hepatitis A, Tetanus) as recommended by your local health care provider.
For the most up-to-date information on all vaccination requirements and the most suitable anti-malarial tablets, we strongly suggest that you seek advice from your local travel centre or consult an official travel health website such as www.travelhealthpro.org.uk
Covid Testing: No mandatory testing is currently required for vaccinated or unvaccinated travellers.
If necessary further details will be sent out to you upon booking, however ensuring that correct and valid visas & vaccinations are obtained remains the sole responsibility of the client.
Extensions

Key Information
CLIMATE
Algeria can be visited year round but summer temperatures in the desert can be intense often exceeding 40oC while the coast sees temperatures of 30-36o. Rainfall is non-existent in the summer and while the interior can experience dry desert winds, the coast is often more humid.
IS THIS TRIP FOR ME?
It may sound obvious, but not all Wild Frontiers tours are the same, and it is important that you choose a tour which is suitable for you. As a minimum, you should make sure that you read the day-by-day itinerary and the Key Aspects to Consider sections carefully. KEY ASPECTS TO CONSIDER
Due to the unpredictable timeframe required to obtain the necessary authorisation for Algerian tourist visa applications, we strongly recommend that you do not make any foreign travel plans for at least 6 weeks prior to the start date of the tour.
Algeria has minimal tourist infrastructure and receives far fewer visitors than neighbouring countries like Morocco or Tunisia. As such service levels cannot be compared and logistically Algeria remains a ‘challenging’ destination, almost guaranteeing that things are unlikely to always go according to plan! However for us that is half the enjoyment of travelling in Algeria.
Anyone in a reasonable state of health, with an open mind and a sense of adventure should be perfectly able to cope with this tour, as many of the activities are optional. Although there are no major walks involved in this trip, please be aware that some of the Roman sites and city tours can involve a fair amount of walking uphill and downhill over uneven ground and on stairs. It is also important to factor in the heat of this special departure with temperatures on the coast between 30-36o and well above 40o in the interior.
It is important to note that during the trip, some restroom facilities may be traditional squat toilets or long-drop toilets. We recommend bringing toilet paper and hand sanitizer.
Please note that when driving in Algeria it is often compulsory for tourist groups to be accompanied by a security convoy in places. The guards in the convoy will change over as we cross from one wilaya (province) to the next. This can significantly increase journey times, resulting in a number of quite long drives so please be prepared for this.
Please be aware that vegetarians can be catered for quite well but the selection and variety for vegans and especially for gluten-free can be very limited in places. People with specific dietary requirements should consider such limitations carefully and we suggest you discuss your needs with us before booking this tour.
Flexibility and the nature of travel in Algeria: For security reasons it might be necessary to change this itinerary at very short notice, and clients must be flexible enough to deal with this and acknowledge that this is an inherent part of travel to Algeria. While we will always try & visit as much of the itinerary as possible, we reserve the right to omit any destination due to security concerns and offer an alternative in its place.
THE NATURE OF ADVENTURE TRAVEL
We feel that it’s worth pointing out that while we will always strive to stick as close to the stated itinerary as possible, it may be necessary from time to time to make changes to our itineraries or services (due to weather, political and religious influences etc.) and this can happen with little or no notice. This unpredictability can be one of the most exciting aspects of adventure travel and for many of our clients often leads to unexpected highlights as the tour-leader necessarily adapts the tour to the changing conditions. However we are aware that this lack of assuredness may not suit everyone. As such, with the greatest respect, if you are someone who needs to know that everything will happen exactly as planned, we would kindly suggest that perhaps our tours are not for you. Adventure travel can be infectious and once you’ve caught the bug, it is likely to never leave you, but especially if this is your first such tour we would strongly urge you to give us a call if you have any concerns whatsoever about your suitability for this trip.
TRAVELLING SOLO AND SINGLE SUPPLEMENTS
As a company approximately 70% of our clients are solo travellers, so it’s very unlikely you’ll be alone!
Our prices are typically based on twin-share accommodation but single supplements are not compulsory for any Wild Frontiers tour. If you prefer not to pay a single supplement we’ll pair you with someone else of the same sex for you to share with throughout the trip. On this trip, if you do opt to pay for a single supplement then please note that it will cover you for all nights of the tour.
Please note that paying a single supplement entitles you to lone occupancy of a single room. In many cases these rooms will be of the same size as a double/twin room, but in some cases they may be smaller.
INSURANCE
Insurance that provides cover for emergency repatriation in case of a medical emergency is compulsory for all tours. You should be aware that due to some of the geographical areas visited and some of the activities included on certain of our trips some standard insurance policies may not always provide adequate cover. As such we strongly recommend that you purchase a policy that adequately covers your trip. Please see the Insurance section for more details.
