ACCOMMODATION

As an overall ethos, wherever possible, we aim to use characterful accommodation that enhances the overall travel experience, not just offers a bed for the night. This can obviously vary dramatically from country to country and from trip to trip. On this particular trip, we will be in a mix of hotels and more traditional local accommodation. Although minimalist, with futon beds and low-rise furniture, the Japanese-style properties are of a high quality and a fine example of traditional Japanese hospitality. Traditionally, in Japan, hotel rooms can be smaller than in other destinations and are typically functional, even in more modern properties.

In traditional properties such as ryokans and pilgrims' lodgings, there may be shared bathroom facilities. You must also be prepared to sit on the floor to eat your meals as well as use futon beds in many locations.

Please be aware that minshuku are small, family-owned accommodations with fewer rooms than standard guesthouses. Therefore, the group may be spread over a number of minshuku depending on capacity and the size of the group. If accommodation is not available at minshuku for the group, you will stay in a nearby hot spring inn with access to the onsen.

As is tradition in Japan, bathing facilities at hot springs and onsen may be separated by gender. You will need to shower before using communal baths and please keep in mind that some facilities have a no swimsuit policy. In more traditional accommodations, such as ryokan with shared bathroom facilities, the onsen and the washing station may be the primary cleaning facilities. These are typically communal open spaces, and you may not have a shower in your room.

Please note that the accommodation mentioned in the itinerary is intended as a guide only and is always subject to availability.

Responsible Travel

With local people, culture and eco-systems in mind, responsible travel and sustainable tourism are at the core of Wild Frontiers. We believe that a successful trip not only delivers a unique and unsurpassable journey for our travellers but also benefits the people and places we visit.

When designing our tours, we actively seek out experiences that have a positive impact on the communities and precious environments we visit - from supporting social enterprises; resting our heads in rural homestays; and eating at locally owned restaurants; to helping fund conservation projects that protect wildlife and their habitats.

Visit the Responsible Travel area of our website to read more, including the work of the Wild Frontiers Foundation through which we fundraise to aid community empowerment and education projects.

Reducing Single Use Plastic

We recognise the environmental issues and challenges around single-use plastic in many countries we visit and are actively working with our partners on the ground to reduce plastic waste on our tours and within the hotels and restaurants we visit. You can help to reduce your personal plastic waste by taking a refillable, filtered water bottle with you on your trip. Filtered water bottles can be refilled from water sources including your hotel room and restaurant taps, drinking fountains and refill stations. Every time you refill your bottle without the use of single-use plastic, you will be helping to reduce waste and protect the environment. There is no doubt that Japan is famous across the globe for its exceptional public transport. Key Information

CLIMATE

Japan is a seasonal destination with distinct seasons. Spring brings mild weather and the iconic cherry blossom (sakura) which travels from the bottom of the country to the top from March to May. Autumn offers cool temperatures whilst the country explodes with colourful foliage of red, orange and gold. As a long country spanning 3,000km, the temperature and weather varies greatly from north to south.

In central Honshu, spring and autumn are typically pleasant and considered the best time to visit with lower levels of rainfall and mild temperatures. Winters stretch from December to February are mild with average seasonal temperatures of 4°C however the central mountainous region can see high levels of snow and colder temperatures. Conversely, summers are hot, humid, and wet, with temperatures often exceeding 30°C. Regardless of the season, it is always recommended to travel with waterproofs and an umbrella as the weather is unpredictable and precipitation remains high throughout the year.

Seasonal variations can also be seen in the surroundings, with spring being synonymous with sakura blossoms and autumn seeing the arrival of magnificent foliage ranging from crimson to gold.

IS THIS TRIP FOR ME?

It may sound obvious, but not all Wild Frontiers tours are the same, and it is important that you choose a tour which is suitable for you. To help you decide and ensure you choose a suitable tour, please refer to our helpful guide here. As a minimum, you should make sure that you read the day-by-day itinerary and the Key Aspects to Consider sections carefully. Should you still have any concerns about your ability to partake in any aspect of the tour, then please contact us.

KEY ASPECTS TO CONSIDER

Anyone in a reasonable state of health, with an open mind and a sense of adventure should be perfectly able to cope with this tour, however, please note there is a lot of walking to visit the different sites and explore towns and villages throughout the tour, including the easy/moderate hike along a section of the Kumano Kodo Trail (approx. 7 km). We will make use of the fantastic train system throughout Japan and for your convenience, we will sometimes have your main luggage transferred between destinations. Therefore, throughout your tour, there will be overnights where you will be without your main luggage. Please ensure you bring a small overnight bag to take with you for overnight essentials. Luggage transfers in Japan are a convenient and reliable service that adds to the ease and enjoyment of travel. Known for their exceptional punctuality and care, these services allow us to send your bags ahead to hotels, freeing you to explore without having to drag your luggage around. The process is secure, efficient, and reflects Japan’s meticulous attention to detail—turning a simple logistics task into part of the fun and stress-free experience of travelling in Japan. Your luggage will be sent ahead on Days 2, 6, and 8.

Please be aware that Japan is an incredibly popular and in-demand destination and, therefore, some areas we will visit during this tour will inevitably be busier with tourists than you may be accustomed to on other Wild Frontiers tours. This can, in some cases, also extend to public transport which is featured throughout this tour. On some days, this could include multiple forms of transport such as bus, subway, train and taxi to get to your destination. We will also use a private minibus for shorter sections of travel where public transport is not suitable.

For those nights that we stay in traditional lodgings as opposed to a hotel, you will need to be happy with sleeping on futons, getting in and out of low-rise furniture (which will also often be the norm in many local restaurants we visit), and eating meals in a cross-legged position.

Whilst we endeavour to cater for all diets, Japan can be quite rigid on dietary requirements and you may find it tricky to find options that can cater for some dietary requirements when you are eating independently throughout the tour, particularly if you are vegan or gluten-free. Meals included in the tour can cater for most dietary requirements and your tour leader will be able to recommend suitable restaurants during the tour. If you have any questions concerning your specific dietary needs prior to booking, please feel free to reach out to us to discuss this further.

Whilst visiting Todaiji Temple and Kasugataisha in Nara Park, please keep in mind that the deer there are wild animals and therefore, their behaviour can be unpredictable. Whilst the deer at the park interact frequently with humans, they can become aggressive if they think you have deer crackers. Standard practice is to open your empty hands and arms to show that you do not have any food and your tour leader will advise further on ways to safely interact with these animals. Aggression is typically in response to food demands, being teased with food, and during the autumn mating season. Deer may also try to eat personal belongings, maps, plastic bags, or other objects held in your hand so it is best to always best to ensure your belongings are secure inside bags. They should not be fed anything other than deer crackers, if you wish to feed them at all.

THE NATURE OF ADVENTURE TRAVEL

We feel that it’s worth pointing out that while we will always strive to stick as close to the stated itinerary as possible, it may be necessary from time to time to make changes to our itineraries or services (due to weather, political and religious influences etc.) and this can happen with little or no notice. This unpredictability can be one of the most exciting aspects of adventure travel and for many of our clients often leads to unexpected highlights as the tour-leader necessarily adapts the tour to the changing conditions. However we are aware that this lack of assuredness may not suit everyone. As such, with the greatest respect, if you are someone who needs to know that everything will happen exactly as planned, we would kindly suggest that perhaps our tours are not for you. Adventure travel can be infectious and once you’ve caught the bug, it is likely to never leave you, but especially if this is your first such tour we would strongly urge you to give us a call if you have any concerns whatsoever about your suitability for this trip.

TRAVELLING SOLO AND SINGLE SUPPLEMENTS

As a company approximately 70% of our clients are solo travellers, so it’s very unlikely you’ll be alone!

If you book as a couple or a pair you will be accomodated in a double or twin room. On this trip, if you do need to pay for a single supplement then please note that it will cover you for all nights of the tour with the exception of the time we spend in Ogimachi, Mount Koya and Kumano Kodo where we are staying in traditional Japanese Ryokan and Minshuku.

Please note that paying a single supplement entitles you to lone occupancy of a single room. In many cases these rooms will be of the same size as a double/twin room, but in some cases they may be smaller.

INSURANCE

Insurance that provides cover for emergency repatriation in case of a medical emergency is compulsory for all tours. You should be aware that due to some of the geographical areas visited and some of the activities included on certain of our trips some standard insurance policies may not always provide adequate cover. As such we strongly recommend that you purchase a policy that adequately covers your trip. If you choose to purchase the Wild Frontiers bespoke policy through Travel & General (currently available to UK residents only) then please note for this trip the minimum required level of cover will be the Standard policy. Please see the Insurance section for more details.
