Travelling in style aboard a private sandal or dahabiya (traditional houseboats), we follow the fertile ribbon of the Nile as it weaves from the ancient city of Thebes, deep into the southern boundaries of Upper Egypt. We follow in the wake of European adventurers, exploring tombs in the Valley of the Kings, visiting the temple complexes of Karnak and Edfu and the bustling markets of Aswan. But more than this, we will also get a chance to explore something of the ‘real’ Egypt, making the most of our flexibility and freedom to escape the tourist trail and visit the remote villages and out-of-the-way historic sites that line the banks of the Nile. On top of these epic sights we plan to watch the longest total solar eclipse of the century from a quiet location away from the crowds.
This is an Egypt that has essentially remained unchanged for millennia, its people living their lives much as their ancestors did centuries ago. This is an Egypt that the tomb raiders couldn’t steal.

Our journey begins in Luxor, Homer’s ‘City of 100 Gates’ and once the power-base of the New Kingdom pharaohs. Those on the suggested group flights will arrive in Luxor in the late evening and transfer to our hotel for the rest of the night.
Day 2 Luxor: Valleys of the Kings & Queens & Luxor Temple

After breakfast we will cross the River Nile and visit the tombs in the Valley of the Kings. We will then visit the home of Dr Carter, the British archaeologist and Egyptologist who discovered the tomb of 18th Dynasty Pharaoh, Tutankhamun in 1922. After lunch at a local restaurant we will explore the Valley of the Queens, the extraordinary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut and the haunting figures of the Colossi of Memnon. We’ll end the day back on the East Bank at the magnificent Luxor Temple, an awesome testament to the power and wealth of the ancient pharaohs.

Heading north by road this morning, we follow the Nile Valley towards the Greco-Roman temple of Dendera, one of the best preserved temples in Egypt. Built during the Ptolemaic period, the complex is dominated by the Temple of Hathor, dedicated to the Egyptian goddess of love and motherhood and built by the later rulers of Egypt to legitimise their claim over the pharaonic crown. The temple’s famous zodiac map, which dates back to the 1st century BC and now resides in the Louvre, was a victim of Napoleonic treasure hunters in the early years of the 19th century. Returning to Luxor we will visit the Luxor Museum in the afternoon this forms a great introduction to the fascinating culture we’ll experience on this trip.
Day 4 Luxor - Esna: Karnak Temple & Dahabiya

Early this morning we will visit Karnak Temple, this vast site built and added to over 1500 years was one of the most important religious complexes in Egypt. After we drive south towards Esna, which brings us to Egypt’s famed locks and the beginning of our journey by river into Upper Egypt. Here we will visit Esna Temple before enjoying lunch at Okra Kitchen, an initiative working to bring more women into tourism as well as preserving the culture of the local traditional recipes. At Esna we also board our dahabiya. Evoking a time of long passed elegance, our sandal/dahabiya affords us an intimacy and freedom denied to those aboard the larger riverboats and, as we slip our moorings and head lazily into the current, we’ll be transported back to the graceful days of 19th century exploration. Depending on overall group size we will use either a sandal or a dahabiya.

Over the coming days we will spend our time enjoying the serene atmosphere of life on board our vessel as we sail south, through landscapes that provide us with the perfect backdrop to our journey. The aim is to divide our time between visiting some of the most important sites along the Nile Valley, whilst enjoying interacting with the local villages. Our first destination is the island of El Hegz, just to the north of Edfu, a journey that will take around 4 to 5 hours. During the journey we can watch the Nile valley landscapes pass us by - and gaze upon rural settings that have remained almost unchanged for centuries. This afternoon we sail to Edfu where we will pay a visit to the remarkably well-preserved temple at Edfu, which after Karnak is the largest in the Nile Valley. Supposedly built on the site of the final battle between the Gods Horus and Seth, the temple was built in the 3rd century BC and lay buried under sand for centuries before being unearthed by the French archaeologist Auguste Mariette in the 1860s.

To the Ancient Egyptians the Nile was simply the ‘Great River’. Its moods and movements affected all aspects of their lives along its fertile banks. Indeed the Greek historian Herodotus described Egypt itself as ‘a gift of the Nile’. This morning we'll visit a small island where we'll wander through local farmland and meet the villagers. Our journey then takes us towards the ancient sandstone quarries of El Silsila, where the great stones that were used to build the temples at Edfu, Thebes and Karnak were cut. One of the principal sites for the worship of the river God Hapi, this region also marked the boundary between Egypt and what was then the ancient kingdom of Nubia. Local tradition has it that a giant chain was strung across the river here to stop the Nubian ships sailing further down the Nile into Egypt. We will also visit the rock-cut temple of the pharaoh Horemheb, the last ruler of the 18th Dynasty, a man whose humble beginnings saw him rise to lead the armies of Tutankhamen before ascending to the throne of Egypt itself. This afternoon we will then visit the box makers in Faris, and learn about the importance of their work to local trade and the supply chain going south along the river.

Returning by boat to the small island today we will have breakfast with a local family and set up ready for the eclipse. The exact location from which we will watch will be decided on the day but could be the dahabiya or perhaps the roof of one of the houses. The eclipse today will be the longest solar eclipse totality of the 21st century and the skies of Egypt should hopefully be completely clear for the experience. The eclipse is due to begin at 11:42 with the darkness descending upon us. The full eclipse will be from 13:05 until 13:10 and the eclipse will end at 14:29. We will have lunch in the village and then set sail in the afternoon for Kom Ombo where we will moor up for the night.

This morning we’ll visit the riverside temple of Kom Ombo, the only temple in the Nile Valley that is dedicated to two gods - Haroeris and Sobek. After visiting we’ll make our way to the town of Daraw, home to a camel market. Returning to our boat we will continue on our journey towards Aswan. The slow pace of our days provide the perfect opportunity to gain a little more understanding of the rich culture and ancestral heritage of this great land: learn some Arabic, or perhaps some hieroglyphics from our informative local guide. There is also the opportunity for some bird watching, spotting the Pied Kingfishers or the Marsh Harrier. Depending on the river and the weather we should arrive into Aswan by the late afternoon in time for dinner.

After breakfast we will visit the beautiful island temple of Isis on Philae, as well as the colossal unfinished obelisk in Aswan’s nearby stone quarries. It was unfortunately abandoned when a flaw was found, but had the obelisk been completed it would have reached a height of nearly 36 metres and weighed in at a hefty 1,320 tons. This afternoon we will head to Aswan town to explore the busy market before a farewell dinner overlooking the great cataracts of the Nile and the old Aswan Dam.

Total Solar Eclipse
On 2nd August 2027, North Africa and parts of the Middle East will witness a rare and spectacular total solar eclipse, with up to 6 minutes and 23 seconds of total darkness—making it the longest eclipse visible from land this century. As the moon completely covers the sun, daylight will turn to twilight, stars may become visible and the sun’s corona will glow in the sky. This dramatic celestial event will be visible across much of the region, with ideal viewing conditions expected due to the region’s typically dry summer climate.Responsible Travel

At the Nile-front village of Faris, you will meet a long-established community of palm leaf box-makers. These handcrafted boxes are made from dried palm leaves using the traditional methods of the region. This is a great opportunity to interact with local craftsmen and learn about the importance of their work to local trade and the supply chain going south along the river.

CAIRO PRE TOUR EXTENSION
On this tour there is an option of starting your trip in Cairo, 2 days prior to the start of the group tour in Luxor. Please note that this tour extension will be with a Local Guide and not a WF Tour Leader and may be shared with other clients booked on your group tour departure. Please find the details of the additional itinerary below.
Day 1: Our journey begins in Cairo this evening. Due to the arrival time of most flights there are no meals or activities included today. Upon arrival into Cairo you will be met and transferred to your hotel for the rest of the night.

Day 2: In Cairo: Starting our busy day with an early breakfast, we will first drive to the much-anticipated Grand Egyptian Museum**. Known locally as GEM, this museum has long been in the making, with plans first announced in 2002, after which a number of setbacks and delays followed. The museum claims to be the largest archaeological museum complex in the world, with over 100,000 different artefacts on display, and stands as a fantastic introduction to our trip. After spending the morning at the museum, we then move on to the awe-inspiring Pyramids of Giza, one of the most spectacular sites in the world

Day 3: This morning we will enjoy a guided tour of the old Islamic district where we’ll visit the main Citadel (Al-Qalaa), a crusader-style fortress dating from the time of Saladin and home to Egypt's rulers for almost 700 years. One of the main highlights in the southern enclosure of the Citadel is the 19th century Mosque of Mohammed Ali, built in a wholly Turkish style between 1830 and 1848. From here we’ll visit the Coptic area of Cairo to see the Hanging Church, the most beautiful church in all of Egypt, with its ornately decorated interior consisting of three barrel-vaulted, wooden roofed aisles, ivory inlaid screens and a finely carved pulpit. There will also be a chance to visit the Civilizations Museum, the first museum in the Arab world focusing on the earliest civilization in history - the ancient Egyptian civilization. Later this afternoon we will transfer to Cairo airport in time for your flight to Luxor*, Homer’s ‘City of 100 Gates’ and once the power-base of the New Kingdom pharaohs. Upon arrival into Luxor you will then meet with the rest of the group and begin your group tour itinerary.

The vessels are very similar indeed, with the sandal being a smaller version of the dahabya. The boats are clean and comfortable and allow for an exclusive means of travel, but if you are expecting a luxury cruise this may not be for you. Meals are prepared on board by the crew and it’s a constant source of amazement how they manage to prepare such feasts in a relatively small galley! All bedrooms are en suite but please note double beds are limited. If you have a sense of adventure and want to see some of the best sites along the river Nile, as well as a few less visited places, then this is the trip for you.

VISAS
Visas are necessary for many of the destinations we travel to and while we aim to provide you with the most up-to-date information, requirements frequently change and as such for the latest advice we advise that you check with the relevant embassies or contact a reputable visa agency. For this tour UK passport holders currently require a visa for Egypt.
If you are taking a direct flight to Luxor or Cairo, you can apply for a visa on arrival at the airport.
Passports should ideally be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the end of your tour.
Non-UK passport holders or non-UK residents should contact the relevant embassies for individual requirements.
VACCINATIONS & ADDITIONAL TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
There are no mandatory vaccination requirements for travellers to Egypt. For any clients transiting for more than 12 hours through an airport/country with a risk of yellow fever transmission you will require a yellow fever certificate.
For all destinations, please make sure you are up-to-date with any standard vaccinations (e.g. MMR, Hepatitis A, Tetanus) as recommended by your local health care provider.

Key Information
CLIMATE
July and August see hot, dry, sunny days in the Nile Valley. Daytime temperatures could be 40-45 degrees and night time temperatures 26-30 degrees. With very little cloud cover and virtually no rainfall the heat is dry and humidity is low.
IS THIS TRIP FOR ME?
It may sound obvious, but not all Wild Frontiers tours are the same, and it is important that you choose a tour which is suitable for you. KEY ASPECTS TO CONSIDER
Anyone in a reasonable state of health, with an open mind and a sense of adventure should be perfectly able to cope with this tour, as many of the activities are optional. The weather during this departure will be hot during the height of the Egyptian summer. Temperatures can be above 40 degrees during the day and only drop to 26-30 at night.
Please be advised that on this trip vegetarians can be catered for but the selection and variety may be limited.
THE NATURE OF ADVENTURE TRAVEL
We feel that it’s worth pointing out that while we will always strive to stick as close to the stated itinerary as possible, it may be necessary from time to time to make changes to our itineraries or services (due to weather, political and religious influences etc.) and this can happen with little or no notice. This unpredictability can be one of the most exciting aspects of adventure travel and for many of our clients often leads to unexpected highlights as the tour-leader necessarily adapts the tour to the changing conditions. However we are aware that this lack of assuredness may not suit everyone. As such, with the greatest respect, if you are someone who needs to know that everything will happen exactly as planned, we would kindly suggest that perhaps our tours are not for you. Adventure travel can be infectious and once you’ve caught the bug, it is likely to never leave you, but especially if this is your first such tour we would strongly urge you to give us a call if you have any concerns whatsoever about your suitability for this trip.
TRAVELLING SOLO AND SINGLE SUPPLEMENTS
As a company approximately 70% of our clients are solo travellers, so it’s very unlikely you’ll be alone!
Our prices are typically based on twin-share accommodation but single supplements are not compulsory for any Wild Frontiers tour. If you prefer not to pay a single supplement we’ll pair you with someone else of the same sex for you to share with throughout the trip.
On this trip, if you do opt to pay for a single supplement then please note that it will cover you for all nights of the tour.
Please note that paying a single supplement entitles you to lone occupancy of a single room. In many cases these rooms will be of the same size as a double/twin room, but in some cases they may be smaller.
