Getting off to a fiery start we’ll explore Argentina’s vibrant cities and passionate culture with an evening of tango in Buenos Aires and folk music in Salta. Our road trip then begins in earnest through the otherworldly geological formations, picture-postcard villages and award-winning vineyards of the Quebrada de las Conchas (Shells' Gorge) and Calchiqui Valley. Heading further north to Purmamarca and Humahuaca Gorge, rainbow-coloured mountains, lunch with an indigenous community and vast salt flats then await us before crossing the Andes into Chile. The pace winds down in the Atacama Desert to enjoy sundowners in the Moon Valley, breakfast by Tatio geysers and a telescopic look at the night desert sky. Our northern expedition then ends with tours and tastings in Santiago’s central market.
This two-week trip offers an unrivalled opportunity to explore the wild beauty and warm hospitality of the Atacama and Puna deserts.

Map & Itinerary

Day 1 Tour starts in Buenos Aires (Argentina)

Day 1 Tour starts in Buenos Aires (Argentina)
Welcome to Argentina’s capital, Buenos Aires, once known as the ‘Paris of South America’ due to its architecture and facades having been modelled on those of French and European cities by Buenos Aires's 19th-century elite. As our suggested group tour flights arrive this evening, today has been left free to unwind from the flight and settle into our new surroundings, however anyone arriving earlier will find their rooms available from around 3pm.
Day 2 Buenos Aires: Colourful Streets & Tango Beats

Day 2 Buenos Aires: Colourful Streets & Tango Beats
The fire that ignited Argentina’s fight for independence was sparked off in the city of Buenos Aires in 1810. Perhaps it should come as no surprise then, that the city was also the birthplace of the fiery tango dance that has become synonymous with the country. Walking through the capital’s neighbourhoods this morning, we’ll learn something of Buenos Aires’s history and culture from the aristocratic architecture of Recoleta to the immigrant communities that shaped the colourful streets of La Boca and San Telmo. This evening, we’ll then get into the Argentine rhythm of things during a tango class, before handing the stage over to the professionals whilst we enjoy the show over dinner.
Day 3 Buenos Aires – Salta: Colonial Past & Folkloric Dance

Day 3 Buenos Aires – Salta: Colonial Past & Folkloric Dance
The fun continues as we fly up to the northern capital of Salta, where a walking tour around its cobblestone centre provides context to the city’s colonial past. Later, an evening of folk music and dance at a local peña will then introduce us to the distinct folkloric traditions of the region.
Day 4 Salta – Cafayate: Natural Canyon Sculptures

Day 4 Salta – Cafayate: Natural Canyon Sculptures
Today’s scenic drive winds through the awe-inspiring Quebrada de las Conchas (Shells' Gorge), a red-rock canyon carved into stunning formations by the whistling wind and endless time of the desert. There will be various opportunities to stop for photos and short walks amongst the surreal natural sculptures, before finally arriving at our hotel in the town of Cafayate.
Approx. driving: 3hrs/200km
Day 5 Cafayate – Cachi (2,500m): Remote Valley Villages

Day 5 Cafayate – Cachi (2,500m): Remote Valley Villages
A top contender for the title of Argentina’s most beautiful drives, our journey today along the national Ruta 40 – which runs the length of the country – takes us back up north and deeper into the Andean highlands of the Calchaquí Valley. The region is dotted with picture-postcard villages, rich in artisan tradition, so we’ll take the opportunity to stop at a few and learn about their crafts along the way.
Approx. driving: 4hrs/150km
Day 6 Cachi (2,500m): High-altitude Wine Tasting

Day 6 Cachi (2,500m): High-altitude Wine Tasting
Taking a break from long scenic drives, this morning we’ll head to one of the area’s high-altitude vineyards, known for their Torrontes variety that grows over 2,000m above sea level. Here we’ll learn how centuries-old wine-making methods have been adapted to the arid desert terrain, before enjoying a wine tasting and a leisurely lunch. The rest of the day can be spent with some downtime back at our beautiful boutique hotel or with a bit of independent exploration around Cachi’s cobbled streets and white-washed buildings, all set against a stunning backdrop of snow-capped peaks.
Day 7 Cachi – Purmamarca (2,300m): Timeless Landscapes & Winding Mountain Passes

Day 7 Cachi – Purmamarca (2,300m): Timeless Landscapes & Winding Mountain Passes
Resuming the journey north, our route today cruises through the expansive Los Cardones National Park dotted with towering cacti, winds over the dramatic Cuesta del Obispo mountain pass, and continues on past the city of Salta to our next stop in the dusty desert town of Purmamarca. Nestled at the base of the Hill of Seven Colours, the scenery here is a palette of earth tones that seem almost unreal.
Approx. driving: 5.5hrs/337km
Day 8 Purmamarca (2,400m): Indigenous Lunch, Humahuaca Gorge & Multi-coloured Hills

Day 8 Purmamarca (2,400m): Indigenous Lunch, Humahuaca Gorge & Multi-coloured Hills
Culture and colour combine during our full-day tour of the region today. We’ll venture north of Purmamarca, first stopping at an indigenous community of pre-Incan descendants for lunch and a guided walk around the area. After lunch we’ll explore a couple more of the highlights around the Humahuaca Gorge, steeped in indigenous heritage and pre-Columbian history, including the spectacular Serranía de Hornocal sometimes referred to as the ‘Hill of Fourteen Colours’, whose rainbow-coloured layers come alive in the afternoon sun.
Approx. drive: 4hrs/185km
Approx. walking: 2.5hrs
Day 9 Purmamarca – San Pedro de Atacama (2,400m) (Chile): Across Andean Salt Flats

Day 9 Purmamarca – San Pedro de Atacama (2,400m) (Chile): Across Andean Salt Flats
One of the characteristic features of the expansive desert plateaus that span Chile, Argentina and Bolivia is its salt flats. Though Bolivia’s Uyuni Salt Flats further north are the world’s largest, the brilliant white Salinas Grandes in Argentina are just as impressive and far less visited. So, we’ll take the opportunity to visit them – and take some obligatory optical-illusion fun photos – before continuing west across the Andes via the Paso de Jama mountain pass, which marks the border between Argentina and Chile and reaches an altitude of approximately 4,200m. Our base for the next three days will be the charming oasis town of San Pedro de Atacama.
Approx. drive: 6hrs/410km
Day 10 San Pedro de Atacama (2,400m): Moon Valley Sundowners & Stargazing

Day 10 San Pedro de Atacama (2,400m): Moon Valley Sundowners & Stargazing
The Atacama Desert is the world’s driest (non-polar) desert with access to some of the clearest skies on earth. A morning at leisure provides the opportunity to wander around the windswept streets and adobe-brick establishments of this desert town or, alternatively, we can simply enjoy cooling off by the pool. Then later this afternoon, our exploration of the area begins with an excursion into Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley), one of the desert’s most notable corners, where dunes and strange rock formations mimic lunar landscapes. As the sun sets, we’ll celebrate our lunar-like expedition with a cocktail toast, before getting ready for some epic stargazing at the local observatory once night falls.
Day 11 San Pedro de Atacama (2,400m): Tatio Geysers

Day 11 San Pedro de Atacama (2,400m): Tatio Geysers
After a very early start and breakfast enroute, this morning we’ll head deep into the desert to witness the cosmic scenes at Tatio Geysers, as the warm rays of the rising sun shine through the steamy columns of thermal waters that erupt metres into the air. During the drive back to town we’ll get a glimpse of another of the scarce number of settlements found in the inhospitable desert. We'll then enjoy an afternoon at leisure.
Approx. driving: 3hrs/160km
Day 12 San Pedro de Atacama – Santiago

Day 12 San Pedro de Atacama – Santiago
After breakfast, we’ll transfer to Calama Airport for our flight to Santiago. Tucked within the surrounding Andes mountains, it may come as a surprise that Chile’s modern capital city is one of the oldest in the Americas, founded in 1541 by Spanish conquistadors. This evening has been left free to relax at our hotel in the popular, central neighbourhood of Providencia.
Day 13 Santiago: The Capital’s Flavours & Farewell Toasts

Day 13 Santiago: The Capital’s Flavours & Farewell Toasts
Our day begins with a walk through some of Santiago’s historic neighbourhoods, learning about the communities, past and present, that have shaped the capital. Making our way through the city’s beating heart, its central market, we’ll then get a taste for how Chile’s history and geography have shaped its cuisine, stopping at some of the stalls to sample the local treats on offer. Later we’ll head over to pisco tasting to enjoy a farewell toast in true Chilean style with the country’s beloved cocktail, the pisco sour, before a final dinner together.
Day 14 Tour ends in Santiago

Day 14 Tour ends in Santiago
The tour ends this morning with lasting memories of lunar-like landscapes and Latin drinks and dance. Those taking the suggested group tour flights will be transferred to the airport today.
ACCOMMODATION USED ON THIS TOUR
Hotel del Antiguo Convento, Salta
Right in the heart of the Salta’s historic centre, Hotel del Antiguo Convento occupies a restored colonial house just three blocks from the city’s central square. Given the protected nature of the building, rooms are unique to each other spread across various categories with most adopting a decor of wrought-iron beds and period-style furniture. In addition to it great location and oodles of character, the boutique hotel boasts a gym; a year-round, outdoor pool; and a on-site, homemade bakery.
Plaza Cafayate, Cafayate
Plaza Cafayate is perfectly located on the corner of its namesake, Cafayate’s central square. El Cortijo, Cachi
This small boutique hotel is situated in the charming town of Cachi, in a former estancia offering guests a warm and inviting atmosphere that blends seamlessly with the wonderful white-washed buildings and character of Cachi . During the refurbishment of this old colonial house, regional materials such as stone, adobe, reed and wood were incorporated into the work. Given the building's history, all 12 rooms are unique and come in various sizes and individual charm.
El Refugio de Coquena, Purmamarca
Set aback from the tiny outpost of Purmamarca is the quaint stone building of Refugio de Coquena. Though simple, the property offers everything needed for a stay in these remote reaches of Argentina’s northern deserts, including heating and an outdoor pool for both the desert’s harsh midday sun and its chilly nights. Rooms are simple with little reminders of the area’s ancestral roots and the indigenous legend of Coquena.
La Casa De Don Tomas, San Pedro de Atacama
Located just 2 kilometres from the Pukará de Quitor ruins, Hotel La Casa de Don Tomás is a high value, low key lodge of quality in San Pedro de Atacama. Responsible Travel
With local people, culture and eco-systems in mind, responsible travel and sustainable tourism are at the core of Wild Frontiers. We believe that a successful trip not only delivers a unique and unsurpassable journey for our travellers but also benefits the people and places we visit.
When designing our tours, we actively seek out experiences that have a positive impact on the communities and precious environments we visit - from supporting social enterprises; resting our heads in rural homestays; and eating at locally owned restaurants; to helping fund conservation projects that protect wildlife and their habitats.
Visit the Responsible Travel area of our website to read more, including the work of the Wild Frontiers Foundation through which we fundraise to aid community empowerment and education projects.

Reducing Single Use Plastic
We recognise the environmental issues and challenges around single-use plastic in many countries we visit and are actively working with our partners on the ground to reduce plastic waste on our tours and within the hotels and restaurants we visit. You can help to reduce your personal plastic waste by taking a refillable, filtered water bottle with you on your trip. Filtered water bottles can be refilled from water sources including your hotel room and restaurant taps, drinking fountains and refill stations. Every time you refill your bottle without the use of single-use plastic, you will be helping to reduce waste and protect the environment. Indigenous Communities of Hornaditas
Northern Argentina is amongst the country’s poorest and least developed regions with access to little support. For this reason, we are incredibly pleased to be able to include an experience that goes some small way in helping some of the region’s most affected – its indigenous communities. Enjoying a tour around Humahuaca run by members of a nearby indigenous community provides a rich cultural interaction, a unique look at the region and financial support for the community.

Visas & Vaccinations
VISAS
Visas are necessary for many of the destinations we travel to and while we aim to provide you with the most up-to-date information, requirements frequently change and as such for the latest advice we advise that you check with the relevant embassies or contact a reputable visa agency. More details can be found here - https://www.wildfrontierstravel.com/visa
For this tour UK passport holders currently do not require a visa for Argentina or Chile.
Passports should ideally be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the end of your tour.
Non-UK passport holders or non-UK residents should contact the relevant embassies for individual requirements.
NB. Please note that as of January 2016 US policy (subject to change) has stated that anyone wishing to travel to or via the USA must have a biometric passport. In addition, anyone who has travelled to several countries including Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Libya, Cuba, Yemen or Somalia since March 2011, is required to apply for a US visa (rather than just an ESTA). If you are affected by this, the process is fairly straightforward and you can read more about it here - www.wildfrontierstravel.com/us-visa .
VACCINATIONS & ADDITIONAL TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
There are no mandatory vaccination requirements for travellers to Argentina or Chile.
For the most up-to-date information on all vaccination requirements and the most suitable anti-malarial tablets, we strongly suggest that you seek advice from your local travel centre or consult an official travel health website such as www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk or www.travelhealthpro.org.uk

Key Information
CLIMATE
Divided by the Andes Mountain Range, the northern deserts of the Atacama bring slightly different climates on the Argentinian and Chilean sides depending on the time of year, with more humidity and rainfall found in Argentina. Daytime temperatures are generally consistently in the high 20s to 30s throughout most of the year, dipping below 20C only in the winter months of Jun-Aug. However, temperatures tend to drop by around 10C-15C at night. Temperatures in the capitals tend to range from the high-20s to low-30s during the summer months (Dec-Feb) and low to mid-teens during the winter months (Jun-Aug), with higher humidity in Buenos Aires.
IS THIS TRIP FOR ME?
It may sound obvious, but not all Wild Frontiers tours are the same, and it is important that you choose a tour which is suitable for you. To help you decide and ensure you choose a suitable tour, please refer to our helpful guide here. As a minimum, you should make sure that you read the day-by-day itinerary and the Key Aspects to Consider sections carefully. Should you still have any concerns about your ability to partake in any aspect of the tour, then please contact us.
KEY ASPECTS TO CONSIDER
Anyone in a reasonable state of health, with an open mind and a sense of adventure should be perfectly able to cope with this tour, however, please note that in order to explore as many of the region's highlights as possible, it was necessary to have a number of longer driving days. Notably days 5,7,8 & 9 have drives of between 4-6 hours.
This itinerary reaches a maximum altitude of approximately 4,200 metres when crossing the Paso de Jama mountain pass. However, this is a transit point and there are no prolonged stays at this elevation. Much of the Atacama Desert plateau and the surrounding region lie at high altitude (over 2,000m above sea level). During the tour, you will spend time in Cachi (2,500m), Purmamarca (approx. 2,200m) and San Pedro de Atacama (approx. 2,400m), while some excursions and road journeys also take place at higher elevations.
Most travellers experience little difficulty at these altitudes, particularly as the majority of sightseeing is by vehicle rather than involving strenuous physical activity. However, altitude can affect individuals differently. If you have any concerns about travelling at altitude we recommend consulting your doctor before booking or travelling.
For this tour, you will benefit from dedicated destination hosts in both Santiago and Buenos Aires, and your main tour leader will meet you in Patagonia. For this tour, you will benefit from dedicated destination hosts in both Santiago and Buenos Aires, and your main tour leader will meet you in Patagonia.
*Please note that domestic flights in Argentina and Chile are often subject to schedule changes and it may sometimes be necessary to amend the itinerary in accordance with such changes, though every effort will be made to keep to itinerary alterations to a minimum.
RECCE TOURS
As we all know, the world is a constantly changing place - destinations & routes that were once cutting-edge now regularly find themselves appearing in mainstream brochures. Coming up with truly original tour ideas is a constant challenge but at Wild Frontiers we are committed to offering you a real alternative to the mainstream and each year we run a handful of new and original adventures. These are our so-called Recce Tours and since the very beginning have proven incredibly popular with those of you who like to act as our “guinea pigs” and join us on these tours. Fantastic fun and highly rewarding, Recce Tours will assuredly not go 100% to plan and it is not uncommon for clients to take an active role in tweaking the itineraries along the way. More challenging than our normal tours, these will often require a greater degree of flexibility...they will not be for everyone.
THE NATURE OF ADVENTURE TRAVEL
We feel that it’s worth pointing out that while we will always strive to stick as close to the stated itinerary as possible, it may be necessary from time to time to make changes to our itineraries or services (due to weather, political and religious influences etc.) and this can happen with little or no notice. This unpredictability can be one of the most exciting aspects of adventure travel and for many of our clients often leads to unexpected highlights as the tour-leader necessarily adapts the tour to the changing conditions. However we are aware that this lack of assuredness may not suit everyone. As such, with the greatest respect, if you are someone who needs to know that everything will happen exactly as planned, we would kindly suggest that perhaps our tours are not for you. Adventure travel can be infectious and once you’ve caught the bug, it is likely to never leave you, but especially if this is your first such tour we would strongly urge you to give us a call if you have any concerns whatsoever about your suitability for this trip.
TRAVELLING SOLO AND SINGLE SUPPLEMENTS
As a company approximately 70% of our clients are solo travellers, so it’s very unlikely you’ll be alone!
Our prices are typically based on twin-share accommodation but single supplements are not compulsory for any Wild Frontiers tour. If you prefer not to pay a single supplement we’ll pair you with someone else of the same sex for you to share with throughout the trip. On this trip, if you do opt to pay for a single supplement then please note that it will cover you for all nights of the tour.
Please note that paying a single supplement entitles you to lone occupancy of a single room. In many cases these rooms will be of the same size as a double/twin room, but in some cases they may be smaller.
INSURANCE
Insurance that provides cover for emergency repatriation in case of a medical emergency is compulsory for all tours. You should be aware that due to some of the geographical areas visited and some of the activities included on certain of our trips some standard insurance policies may not always provide adequate cover. As such we strongly recommend that you purchase a policy that adequately covers your trip. Please see the Insurance section for more details.
