In Italy, the official language is Italian, spoken by approximately 93% of the population, however there are a number of local and regional dialects that some linguists would consider to be separate languages. Home to the Pope who resides in the heart of Rome in Vatican City, Italy is considered the cradle of Catholicism. Italy is now a secular state and many religions are now present across the country, however Roman Catholicism is still the prominent religion within the population and plays an important role in Italian culture.
