The month of February may mark the month of romance with Valentine's Day, but the UK winter season is still very much present. Rather than endure the cold, dark days, why not escape to a rejuvenating destination? You can hit the summer sun in South America, explore Asia's’ culture or sit back and relax on a cruise down the Nile. Below are our favourite nine places to visit in February that you need to consider for your next winter getaway. 





Egypt

Egypt experiences its high season in February thanks to the cooler temperatures for sightseeing and warmer temperatures by the coast. These sunny, comfortably warm days do draw in the crowds though, so you'll find the famous ruins busier and prices higher. On the 22nd, join in with the Abu Simbel Sun Festival where you can see the sun god statues of the inner sanctuary lit up by sunlight. Outside of the temple, celebrate with music, dances and street food.

Ethiopia

Ethiopia's peak season runs from January to March, in part due to the sunny, mild weather, offering clear blue skies. It starts to heat up in the north-west and south-west of the country and in the north, it's slightly cooler and the nights are chilly so be sure to take layers. Dry conditions mean easy climbing when trekking in the Simien Mountains. Alternatively, head to Gambella National Park for Africa's second largest mammal migration.

Guatemala

Guatemala is a bit of a year round destination when it comes to weather, but February falls in the dry season and between busy periods. This is preferable as you'll mostly find warm, sunny days and less crowds, perfect for exploring the country's ancient ruins and natural wonders. At higher altitudes, the evenings are cooler and lowland areas might experience a few showers, but nothing extreme.

Oman

February brings some of the coolest temperatures in the year to Oman, but it's still warm, usually hovering in the twenties with colder evenings. Short bursts of rainfall can be expected, but they don't usally last very long so won't ruin your holiday. Muscat Festival is held annually in February, which celebrates Omani culture and heritage throughout the whole month.

India

Although weather conditions vary across India, February is a good time to visit as it's generally warm. It's not as hot as in the height of summer, which is great for taking in popular sites. Delhi and the Golden Triangle experience more comfortable temperatures too, so head there before it heats up by April. Around the Himalayas, the hiking trails can be covered in snow so it's best to avoid this area, but skiing is an option in Kashmir.

Mexico

Most of Mexico is still in the dry season at this time of year, the sun is bright and it's pleasantly hot. This is a great time for a wildlife lover to visit to see the monarch butterfly migration from central Mexico as they head to Canada. It's also the best time to spot migrating whales arriving at the coast, including humpbacks and blue whales. Carnaval also falls in February (or sometimes early March) and is one of the biggest fiestas in Mexico.

Cambodia

February is a peak time to visit Cambodia as it's sunny, dry and comfortably hot, which means whether you want to explore the famous sites or relax by the beach, you'll find the temperatures enjoyable. Meak Bochea Day, celebrating the spontaneous gathering of 1,250 monks to where Lord Buddha had retreated, usually falls in February (the full moon day of the third lunar month) and is celebrated in Buddhist temples across the country. We recommend visiting later in the month to avoid Chinese New Year, when the temples and sites can be crowded.

Myanmar

Myanmar is hot and dry across the board in February, so whether you want to take in the beaches, plains or foothills, you'll enjoy the good weather. It's heating up, but not uncomfortably so. There are plenty of festivals to enjoy too, such as Chin National Day on the 20th, which celebrates Chin culture, Lahu New Year, the Mahamuni Pagoda Festival held in Mandalay and the Shwedagon Festival, the biggest temple festival held in Feb/March.

Nicaragua experiences dry, mild and sunny weather in February, but it can be a popular time to visit, especially in places like Granada and Ometepe. The weather is ideal for checking out the lovely beaches on the Pacific and Caribbean coasts, you'll find lush green countryside and ideal trekking conditions. In the second week of February, you can enjoy the International Poetry Festival in Managua.
