Indonesia is home to more than 17,500 islands, including the world’s most populous - Java, creating a nation of quite breathtaking diversity which can’t help to inspire those visiting its shores. Sprawled across nearly two million square kilometres of ocean, from North Sumatra, through Bali and Flores, up to North Sulawesi, its islands and archipelagos span nearly one eighth of the planet’s total circumference; stretching from the Indian Ocean around Banda Aceh to the western provinces of Papua.
Our Indonesia group tours and tailor-made holidays dive into this intoxicating mix of idyllic beaches, brooding volcanoes and tropical rainforest, and the islands lay claim to some of the richest fauna and flora on earth. Indonesia is the land of the Sumatran tiger and the orangutan and it can boast the world’s greatest diversity of coral reef fish, with more than 1,650 species in eastern Indonesia alone. It is also the refuge of dragons, with the island of Komodo giving its name to the largest living lizards in the world. Indonesia is home to no fewer than 300 different ethnic groups, over 700 languages, eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites and one of the longest coastlines in the world.
It is a land where the Balinese spirit and the animist beliefs of the ancients go hand in hand with the colonial architectural heritage of the Dutch East Indies and one of the richest and most vibrant cuisines in the world. Indonesia’s national motto is “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika”, which literally translates as ‘many, yet one’, and it is through our selection of group and tailormade tours that we take in this wonderful kaleidoscope of natural and cultural diversity. For a country whose depth and scope defies homogenisation, never was a country’s mantra more apt.
