Next explore Sri Lankan rural life with a walk to an ancient local village before enjoying lunch at Geoffrey Bawa’s iconic hotel – Heritance Kandalama. Later this afternoon, go on a jeep safari in Minneriya National Park, renowned for its large herds of elephants.
Day 7 Sigiriya - Dambulla - Kandy: Buddhist Art
Dambulla is an important stop on any itinerary, especially for the art lovers, five caves are filled with around 150 statues and paintings of the Buddha. Initially began over 2000 years ago, they have been added to over the centuries with the latest in the 20th Century, and include a 15m reclining Buddha. Continuing on towards Kandy, make a stop at the workshop of a local artisan, the area is rich in traditional crafts such as clay pot making, weaving and lacquer work. Arrive into Kandy in the late afternoon and head to the Temple of the Tooth for the colourful evening Puja ceremony.
Day 8 Kandy: Botanical Gardens & Temple
The last capital of the ancient Sri Lankan kings, Kandy is one of the country's cultural and spiritual gems with a blend of contemporary as well as ancient Sinhala architecture. EXAMPLE ACCOMMODATION
Kandy House, Kandy
Providing exclusivity and history amongst the hills of Kandy, Kandy House is a luxurious boutique property with only nine rooms. This was the home of the king's Chief Minister, Ratwatte Adigar, who betrayed his king to the British in the early 19th Century as Ceylon fell into colonial hands in 1815. The 200-year-old property has now been restored to include modern comforts, yet still retains Ratwatte family photos and antique furniture. The white interiors, polished hardwood floorboards, jack wood staircase and Dutch-style antique furniture all add to the historic setting. The freshwater pool in the garden provides an irresistible opportunity to unwind and relax under the shade of tropical trees while the restaurant veranda and Ayurvedic masseur provide an excuse to indulge.
Galle Fort, Galle
Galle Fort is a unique boutique hotel situated in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage listed Galle Fort area. The building itself is over 300 years old and was once a Dutch merchants house. Now it has 13 bedrooms that have been restored in a luxurious, colonial style, the sensitivity of which has been recognised by UNESCO. It has also won several awards for its excellent service and historic atmosphere. In keeping with the 17th Century Era, the property does not have televisions or radios, however there is now a small laptop with WI-FI access available to guests in the lobby. The restaurant produces excellent Asian fusion cuisine, using fresh seafood resourced from local fishermen.

Each bungalow has a Manager, Chef, Butler and support staff to welcome guests as once was custom at a planter's home. Meals are based on fresh produce, cooked to order and range from western fare to tea infused dishes and, of course, traditional Sri Lankan classics. Scenic walking trails link the properties, which are from 5 to 15 km apart, offering views in all directions. Trekking or biking along the Tea Trails takes you through the heart of the magic Ceylon tea country.
Uga Ulagalla, Anuradhapura

The organic paddy field provides fresh produce to the restaurant, serving national and international fusion cuisine. Authentic meals are served at the Kamatha restaurant, set within the paddy fields, using traditional food preparation equipment and cooking techniques. The property has also been a pioneer in responsible and sustainable tourism in Sri Lanka, producing a solar farm, organic gardens, and more., all of which you can learn about when staying here. Between activities, find the spa hidden within the lush foliage for a truly relaxing and pampering experience.
