Until fairly recently, Ulaanbaatar was a sleepy capital with a population of about 500,000, then international mining firms struck gold in the surrounding hills and the city has grown exponentially since. Built on the banks of the Tuul Gol River, Ulaanbaatar is by far Mongolia's largest city. Its centre is largely dominated by Soviet-style skyscrapers, under whose shadows couples stroll in traditional dress. The city is surrounded by picturesque mountains and wide sweeping vistas.
