The Alpine scenery and fantastical rocks of Terelj National Park formed the homelands of Genghis Khan and his hordes. The rock formations of the park are fascinating, while the 250 plus bird species make it an enchanting place to relax. Many wild animals roam these mountains, including moose, brown bears and ibexes. Nomadic tribesmen still drive their herds around these pastures, while living in felt gers just like their forebears. Within the park there is the opportunity to horse ride on the many trails, or just walk amongst and enjoy the flora and fauna. Terelj National Park is the closest to Ulaanbaatar compared with other parks, making it a popular choice for travellers who tend to spend a shorter time in Mongolia, but still absolutely worth a visit.
Best experiences

Kayak on the Tuul River
The wide, open Tuul River is ideally shallow and obstacle-free making it suitable for all abilities, whilst the fast-flowing water and various bends make the kayaking a fun and energetic experience.
Get out on horseback
Terelj is home to some outstanding scenery of forested hills and valleys and an abundance of bird and animal life. The best way to explore the park is by foot or on horseback, giving you the opportunity to get to the remoter valleys and take in the scenery.
