Explore the ancient monoliths
The extraordinary stelae fields were built as tombstone-cum-monuments to local rulers, the largest being over 33m high if erect and weighing over 500 tons. There's not a full explanation as to how these massive blocks were carved, transported and erected.

Located in the centre of Axum, the most sacred shrine in Ethiopia is the 17th-century Church of St. Mary of Zion. It claims to contain the Ark of the Covenant, and is watched over by the chosen guardian. Nearby you can also visit the small city museum.
