Arriving in Khasab, on the Musandam Peninsula, you will be transferred to your hotel.

Heading up into the mountains this morning, you'll follow a winding track towards the heights of Jebel Harim, the highest point on the peninsula. Lying some 2,087 metres above sea level, the journey up takes in some incredible views, with terraced mountain villages, lush forests of acacia and dry wadis laid out before you. Stopping at the picturesque villages of Sayah and Rowdah provides a chance to admire the vistas, before returning via Khawr Najid and the Al Khalidya Nature Park.

Boarding a traditional Omani dhow this morning, the day sees you enjoying a cruise through the spectacular waters of Musandam's longest and most impressive fjord. Often referred to as 'The Norway of Arabia', the turquoise waters and creamy limestone cliffs of the Musandam provide an idyllic backdrop to small fishing villages and the occasional visit from friendly dolphins. Anchoring around Telegraph Island, there will be time for a swim and a snorkel before lunch, after which you will take a leisurely cruise back to Khasab.

Day 4 KHASAB - SALALAH

Day 4 KHASAB - SALALAH

Transferring to the airport this morning, the next leg of the journey sees you flying down towards Salalah, a city quite distinct from the rest of the country, both in terms of its physical appearance and its cultural character. Depending on flight connections, you will either fly via Muscat, or drive to neighbouring Dubai and fly direct. On arrival you will then be transferred to your hotel.

Today's tour begins with a visit to the old fishing village of Taqah, famed for its dried sardines and traditional old Dhofari houses. Continuing on to the ancient ruins of Sumharam (Khor Rohri), you'll then explore the easternmost outpost of the old Hadramawt Kingdom before taking a relaxing stroll through Wadi Darbat. Driving up into the Qara Mountains you'll enjoy some stunning views across western Salalah, before heading to the white sands of Mughsail Beach and the frankincense groves that lie close to the country's western border.

Leaving Salalah after breakfast you'll take a 4WD vehicle towards the vast and empty landscapes of the Rub Al Khali. Encompassing some 250,000 square miles of waterless desert, the Empty Quarter cover much of the southern half of the Arabian Peninsula. Heartland of the nomadic Bedouin, made famous by Wilfred Thesiger in his book 'Arabian Sands', these haunting landscapes provide the dramatic setting for a night's wild camping beneath the desert sky.

Day 7 THE EMPTY QUARTER - WADI SHWAYMIAH

Day 7 THE EMPTY QUARTER - WADI SHWAYMIAH

Leaving the desert behind you'll head away from the vast wilderness of the Empty Quarter this morning and head back towards the coast and the beautiful limestone canyons of Wadi Shwaymiah. The journey is filled with pockets of colour and calm, as Oman's dazzling wadis provide an elegant contrast against the harsh backdrop of the desert landscape.

Day 8 WADI SHWAYMIAH - RAS AL MADRAKAH

Day 8 WADI SHWAYMIAH - RAS AL MADRAKAH

Today provides an ideal opportunity to make the most of Oman's rugged coastline. The long drive north to Ras Madrakah provides an ample array of viewpoints and photo opportunities to enjoy as you pass through a picturesque collection of fishing villages, beaches and wadis en route to tonight's camp.

Day 9 RAS AL MADRAKAH - MASIRAH ISLAND

Day 9 RAS AL MADRAKAH - MASIRAH ISLAND

Crossing over to the rugged island of Masirah this morning, you'll spend the next couple of days enjoying the natural bounties of Oman's largest island. An important breeding ground for rare loggerhead sea turtles, it lies some 19 kilometres off the Omani coast and is reached by way of a regular ferry service that utilises old converted tank landing craft to make the hour and a half crossing.

Day 10 MASIRAH ISLAND

Today you will have a chance to explore Masirah with your local guide. The island enjoys miles of isolated sandy beaches and it is home to all four of Oman's nesting species of turtle. Indeed, the island provides a rare haven for the largest population of loggerhead turtles in the world. The shallow offshore waters are also ideal for snorkelling, whilst the island's rugged coastline has proven a dangerous spot for passing dhows, littering the shoreline with a number of wrecks.

Day 11 MASIRAH ISLAND - WAHIBA SANDS

Leaving the island behind this morning, you head next for the vast expanse of Wahiba Sands. With over 10,000 square kilometres of shifting sands and towering 100 metre high dunes, these seemingly barren deserts are in fact home to foxes, gazelles, birds and small isolated settlements of semi-nomadic Bedouin.

Day 12 WAHIBA SANDS - JEBEL AKHDAR

Turning your back on the dunes of the desert, the drive north this morning takes you on towards the jagged mountains of the Jebel Akhdar (the Green Mountain). A fascinating insight into local Omani culture, the journey is filled with wonderful scenery, captivating villages, ancient labyrinthine water systems and orchards of walnuts, pomegranates and damask roses. A leisurely walk through the villages of Al Aqr, Al Ayn and Ash Shirayjah this afternoon provides an ideal opportunity to experience a fascinating slice of rural life.

The first stop of the day will be in the historic old city of Nizwa, home to an imposing 17th century fort and a bustling souk. After lunch you'll then visit the beehive-shaped Zakeet Tombs in Izki, which historians have dated back to the third millennium BC. There may also be time to visit Jernan Cave located below the ancient village of Ainizar, before returning to Nizwa for the evening.

Day 14 NIZWA - BAHLA - JABRIN - MISFAH - JEBEL SHAMS

Day 14 NIZWA - BAHLA - JABRIN - MISFAH - JEBEL SHAMS

This morning provides an opportunity to visit two of Oman's finest citadels, beginning with a photo stop outside the impressive World Heritage Site of Bahla Fort. Moving on to the fort at Jabrin, you'll then visit possibly the finest 17th century fortresses in the country, whose exquisite ceilings provide eloquent testimony to the skills of the fort's original builders. Continuing on to the spectacular hillside village of Misfah in time for lunch, the afternoon then sees you heading into the spectacular mountain landscapes of Jebel Shams.

Day 15 JEBEL SHAMS

At over 3,000 metres, Jebel Shams (The Mountain of the Sun) is one of the highest points on the eastern Arabian Peninsula. Often called the 'Grand Canyon' of Oman, these mountains stretch in a 700 kilometre arc that is filled with hidden valleys and fertile oases. This morning you will take a walk along the rim of the canyon, enjoying the views out across Wadi Ghul and its fertile expanse of fig, apricot and pomegranate trees.

Day 16 Jebel Shams - Muscat

The drive back to Muscat today takes you by way of Wadi Bani Awf and Bilad Sayt, an idyllic mountain village with a wealth of picturesque terraces. Enjoying one of the most scenic road trips in the country, the drive then takes you by way of the beautifully restored fort at Nakhal. The views from the roof are particularly impressive, whilst Nakhal's famous springs provide a wonderfully sheltered spot to take in the lush plantations and mountain peaks before completing the journey back to the capital.

Omani food is often overlooked which is a shame as it's a sumptuous blend of South Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine. My favourite dish and bit of a national icon is the wonderfully fragrant Shuwa.
