Our rating: Luxury | Property style: Boutique Hotel

Lying within the walls of the fort, the five star Amangalla Hotel is an amalgamation of buildings that have a history stretching back over 400 years. Previously the site was the headquarters for the Dutch commander and his officers and later a billet for British soldiers. In 1865, the buildings were combined to create the New Oriental Hotel which traded for 140 years before opening its doors as the Amangalla in 2005. This is a beautiful base from which to explore Galle Fort, a Unesco Heritage site, and the historic town of Galle. As you would expect all the rooms are of an impeccably high standard and have been refurbished in classic colonial style. There is a beautiful pool area and softly lit arched hallways ascend to five treatment rooms where massage therapies draw on Sri Lankan Ayurvedic healing traditions.
