How Do I Decide If This Is The Right Trip For Me?
Travelling on a Wild Frontiers group tour can be a very rewarding and memorable experience. However as each tour is very different, and can involve significantly different travel times, comfort levels and physical fitness requirements, it’s important that you take time to choose a trip that’s right for you.
These key steps should help you decide if a trip is a good fit for you.
1. The first thing to do is to read the itinerary in full carefully. You should be comfortable and confident in your ability to partake in all aspects of the tour.
2. Look at the Fitness Rating for the tour. Each tour has been given a designated Fitness Rating (ranging from LOW to HIGH) with explanatory descriptions as below.
- LOW: You should be comfortable walking around towns and cultural sites. May include some optional walks (typically 1-2hrs).
- LOW/MODERATE: May be of a long duration and/or involve numerous border-crossings. May include easy/moderate day walks (up to 2-3hrs/day). You should be relatively fit and lead a generally active lifestyle.
- MODERATE: May include several easy/moderate day walks (up to 2-5hrs/day) possibly at altitude. You should be relatively fit and lead a generally active lifestyle. Previous experience of similar trips helpful.
- MODERATE/HIGH: May involve several days of moderate hiking (up to 3-6 hrs/day) possibly at altitude. You must be a fit and active traveller with appropriate trekking experience.
- HIGH: May involve several days of moderate/strenuous trekking (up to 4-7 hrs/day) possibly at altitude. You must be a very fit and active traveller with appropriate trekking experience
It’s worth noting that these are general guidelines only and for ALL tours (including those designated as LOW), while you absolutely don’t need to be a budding Olympian, you should have a good general level of fitness. In broad terms this means that at the very least you should be able to:
- Walk up 3 flights of stairs without pausing
- Walk 2.5 miles (4 kms) in an hour on uneven ground, which may be steep or poorly paved
- Get into, and out of any vehicle, possibly involving a large step up, several times a day without assistance
- Stand for lengthy periods of time (i.e. 1-2hrs) possibly in direct sunlight
- Manage and carry your own luggage at all times throughout the tour
3. Read the Key Aspects To Consider section which will highlight any particular challenge or requirement of that trip.
4. Let us know if you have any concerns about your ability to fully partake in the tour, and if you have a medical condition or a disability which may affect your holiday or necessitate special arrangements being made for you, please discuss these with us before booking – or, if the condition develops or changes subsequently - as soon as possible before departure. It’s worth highlighting that as per our Booking Conditions, if it is felt that your physical condition or behaviour is such as to affect the well-being of yourself or other members of the group or the enjoyment of other members of the group, you may be asked by the tour-leader to sit-out a particular excursion or to leave the tour altogether. By booking on the trip you are agreeing to these conditions of travel so please consider this carefully when making your decision.
5. Please bear in mind also that due to the nature of group tour travel, it is also important to note that everyone should be able to adhere to a reasonable pace that does not negatively impact on the day’s itinerary or on the enjoyment of the rest of the group.
6. With regards to age-limits, we’re happy to say that there is no upper age limit on any of our trips. However, should you be 80 or older at the time of travel – or for participants of a younger age on our tours with a higher activity level - we may ask you some additional questions about your health and fitness, and in some cases require you to provide proof of medical fitness before confirming your place on the trip.
Additionally, regarding lower age limits, for all tours the lead booker must be over 18 at the time of booking, and for group tours everyone on a booking must be at least 16 (and on some tours at least 18) by the first day of travel.
7. If you have any questions or concerns about any aspect regarding your suitability for a trip, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
