Accommodation - Tajikistan

Staying in a guesthouse, whether in a town or a remote village is an ideal way to meet with the Tajik people and understand a little of their way of life, host families are friendly and welcoming often offering a higher level of service than most hotels! Guesthouses do vary but all provide sleeping arrangements in a carpeted room where brightly coloured mattresses are unfolded on the floor and pillows and blankets provided. Meals are generally taken in the traditional manner, sitting on the floor either around a low table or a blanket where generous amounts of home cooked and often home grown food are laid out. Some of the larger guesthouses do have dining areas with table and chairs. Bathroom facilities are outside either in a small hut or a separate building in the courtyard and many guesthouses also provide a shower room. Those in villages, particularly along the fertile Wakhan Valley will often have a garden with a daybed for relaxing on. Or, if you are feeling more active, one of your hosts will often steer you in the right direction for a walk in the surrounding countryside.

If visiting Khodjent take your trunks - a swim in the Amu Darya at sunset is lovely.
