El Albergue, Sacred Valley
Our rating: Superior | Property style: Boutique Hotel
The boutique El Albergue Hotel is one of the best places to stay in town and is something of an institution in Ollantaytambo, the heart of the Sacred Valley. Situated on the edge of town, on the train station’s platform, the hotel houses only a handful of rooms and a family casita surrounding the ground’s wonderful gardens. Rooms are simple and offer a comfortably rustic stay, ideally located to arrive from or take the scenic train to Machu Picchu. Standard rooms face the train station platform, and although the trains do not run during the night, light sleepers who wish to lie in in the morning or get an early night’s rest may consider upgrading to one of the superior rooms towards the back of the property. Superior balcony rooms offer breathtaking views of the mountains surrounding the town. There is an onsite restaurant, long considered one of the best places to eat in town, that can become busy during peak months when it is advisable to book upon arrival or ahead of time. For a special experience, the hotel’s café is one of the few places to sample a traditional Pachamanca lunch, made under the earth and sourced from the hotel’s own gardens.

The Relais & Châteaux, Sol y Luna property is a rustic yet luxurious hotel with 38 spacious and beautifully decorated suites and bungalows, spread amongst the manicured grounds of the hotel. The casitas each have a living room, separate bedroom, walk-in closet and marble tiled bathroom; some even have a Jacuzzi on the terrace. The split-level bungalows are very spacious and colourful, reflective of the bright flowers in the surrounding gardens, and are perfect for families. The main building houses the Killa Wasi restaurant with mezzanine bar and a pool on the terrace outside. Much like the hotel, the restaurant has a formidable reputation of being one of the best in the area, but by no means is pretentious. There is also a fantastic spa on the property and horses’ stables, as the hotel keeps its own Peruvian horses and even puts on a show most days at the ‘Rancha’. The Sol y Luna is a delightful place to stay offering tranquillity, positivity, luxury and quality.
