SUGGESTED ACCOMMODATION
Sabuk Lodge, Laikipia Wildlife Reserve
Perched atop a cliff with stunning views of the valley below, this owner-run and managed lodge is rightly regarded as one of Kenya’s most unique and innovative lodges. The spacious stone cottages have open fronts so that guests are woken by the rising sun each morning; whilst the en-suite bathrooms are open to the elements. The cottages all have seating areas with addictive views. The Eagle Cottage has a private plunge pool and, with two en-suite rooms, is ideal for families. The main lodge houses a large, multi-level dining room and lounge area where meals are enjoyed communally and hosted by the charming owner, Verity Williams, one of the first female safari guides in Kenya.
Oltyiani Trail Camps, Loita Hills
The first camp on the trail will be the River Camp where, upon arrival, you will be met with a welcome drink. The second camp will be the Oltyiani Camp, set up deeper into the Rift Valley and Ossasinai Camp marks the final evening of the journey. The camps are made up of individual 4 x 4 African bell tents or dome tents, and a main mess tent. To keep comfortable and warm, each tent is provided with a mattress, pillows, towels, sheets, duvets and a hot water bottle. There is a light inside the tent and a canvas wash basin outside. Portable toilets and showers are also provided, and services include a chef/waiter, guards and a local Loita Maasai guide and host.
Speke's Camp, Maasai Mara Conservancies
The seven ensuite tents boast large bathrooms with traditional safari bucket showers, hot water and flushing toilets. The private sleeping and living areas too are spacious and come with wardrobes; a table and desk; and small, outside seating area. The two larger tents comfortably fit two double beds, perfect for families and small groups. Meals can be enjoyed communally in the dining mess tent, which is open sided with plenty of cosy armchairs for a bit of downtime in between activities. For a special treat, meals and sundowners can be enjoyed outside when the weather is nice. As one of the more affordable camps in the Maasai Mara, Speke’s is recommended for most trips to the region.
