Laikipia Wilderness Camp

Excellent standards without the big price tag

Our rating: Premium | Property style: Tented Camp

Laikipia Wilderness Camp offers its guests a chance to enjoy a wonderfully rustic safari experience in one of Kenya’s most scenic landscapes. Whilst the camp may lack some of the luxuries offered by other camps in the area, it is impeccably run and is a great choice for those looking for an authentic experience. There are five simple and spacious tents at the camp, all of which have their own open air, en-suite bathrooms with running water and flush loos. The tents all have double beds and gauze over the windows to keep bugs out and allow a cool breeze to flow through. There is a covered veranda with wicker chairs where guests can relax in the afternoons. The main mess area has indoor seating and an outdoor terrace where meals can be enjoyed when the weather permits. Evenings are spent around the campfire discussing the day’s experience and listening to your guide’s tales of a life spent around Africa’s big game. Activities that are possible from the camp include game drives, walking safaris, rock climbing, swimming in the river, tubing and fishing, Samburu village visits and, occasionally, fly-camping out under the stars.

Sosian, Laikipia Wildlife Reserve

The old 1940s ranch house of Sosian is one of the most iconic properties in Kenya and a superb place to spend your time whilst in this stunning part of the country. Small and boasting wonderful personal service, a stay here is highly recommended when planning a trip to Kenya. There are seven well-appointed and spacious cottages, including a two-bedroom family cottage. All of the rooms have en-suite bathrooms and full amenities are provided. The comfortable rooms have a very traditional feel to them in keeping with the lodge’s history as a ranch house. The main part of the lodge is raised up off the lawns and houses the dining room, lounge and bar area. The wrap-around veranda is a great spot to sit in the afternoons and watch the world go by. The inviting swimming pool offers a welcome relief from the heat of the day and staff are always on hand to serve drinks around the pool. The food here is superb and a real feature of a stay at Sosian. As well as game drives and walks, horse-riding safaris, camel treks, overnight fly-camping in the bush and ranching activities can also be enjoyed..

The house has six comfortable bedrooms; all are en-suite and have wonderful views out across the escarpment. Each room has their own unique style, with certain rooms being better for families owing to their proximity to one another. The main area of the lodge consists of an open-sided lounge and bar area which looks out across the swimming pool. Informality is the order of the day at Ol Malo House, with guests welcome to help themselves to drinks and many an evening is spent in the lounge with a cooler of drinks and chatting with the owners Andrew and Chyulu about their life in the bush. There is a separate outdoor dining area to the side of the lodge and dinners under the stars are a regular feature of life at Ol Malo.
