Known as the "Rose-Red City", the ancient Nabatean Kingdom was the capital and most important trading city. The Nabateans established an elaborate network of caravan routes, which brought spices, incense, myrrh, gold, silver, and precious stones from India and Arabia, to be traded onto the west. Their city was adorned with palaces, temples, and arches as a result of the wealth they acquired.
First discovered by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt in 1812, this UNESCO World Heritage site has been described as “one of the most precious cultural properties of man's cultural heritage”.

Explore Little Petra
Less-visited but equally charming, Little Petra was thought to have been a commercial area where caravans would have paused. The Bedouin are still able to sleep in the caves here, which they are not allowed to do on the main sight of Petra.
Descend to a secret passageway
If you're feeling adventurous descend the 375 steps through the hill into an amazing secret passageway that leads to a subterranean spring. Climb up a ladder to surface outside Shobak Castle. Tread carefully, it's not the easiest walk!
