Our rating: Premium | Property style: Ryokan

Transforming into a sea of colour in spring, the Iwaso ryokan is situated in a beautiful part of Momijidani Park. Founded in 1893, this classic Japanese inn was the first establishment to open its doors on Miyajima. For a truly Japanese accommodation experience, then Iwaso is the place due to its ‘miya-daiku’ style, built by craftsmen who built Japan’s superb ornate Shinto shrines. The lovely views of the surrounding woodland, ocean and tori shrine gate make for a peaceful atmosphere throughout the ryokan’s three main buildings. There are 38 rooms, all of which are spacious and traditional in style with futon mattresses, tatami flooring and minimal furnishings. Each room is equipped with a private bathroom, air conditioning and useful amenities. Iwaso’s menu includes Western options as well as kaiseki meals using local produce from the nearby waters and mountains. A highlight of your stay at Iwaso will be the Wakamiya hot spring which offers gentle water for the onsen baths surrounded by beautiful nature.
