Outstanding service and facilities, giving you the 5* experience
Our rating: Luxury | Property style: Traditional Accommodation
Opened in April 2013, the former Neil Armstrong houseboat is easily the most luxurious on either lake. Owned and run by Altaf Chapri, a real visionary in the world of Indian boutique tourist accommodation, the place oozes style and charm. Situated on the western bank of Dal Lake with uninterrupted views of the lake's mirror-like, shimmering waters and the green hills beyond, it has arguably the best location. It consists of 5 beautiful rooms, each with magnificent bathrooms - the last one being a bigger suite - a spacious living room and dining area, a front porch and stunning roof terrace. It has two members of staff per room, thereby offering a level of service unmatched anywhere else on the lake. It has a wonderful, French-trained chef that knocks up top a la carte dishes - many with a local Kashmiri flavor - and it has Wi-Fi, a small library and a motorised launch should you need to get to shore quickly. All in all the Sukoon houseboat has been designed to take those lucky enough to get a room here to another level. It is one of the most peaceful places you'll ever stay... particularly if you book the whole thing!

Lalit Grand Palace Srinagar
Encircled by the Himalayan ranges and set before the waters of Dal Lake, this former Maharajah's palace has been meticulously restored to reflect something of its former glory. Built in 1910, the property is steeped in the history of colonial India and features 113 rooms and suites including 10 luxurious cottages. The rooms offer 5-star amenities including plasma screen TVs and high speed WiFi, tasteful interiors and, in many cases, garden or lake views. Other facilities include the hotel's signature and award-winning spa, 24-hour in-room dining, an all-weather swimming pool and a gymnasium and health club.
Situated on a quiet corner of Dal Lake, with wonderful views out over a lotus field, picturesque houseboats and the mountains beyond, besides Sukoon this is probably the most luxurious group of houseboats in Kashmir. Consisting of seven houseboats, ranging in size from the mega seven-bedroom supper boat, the Shalimar Palace, to the two-bedroom Pigeon Deluxe, they are spacious, for the most part exquisitely carved, each coming with the their own housekeeper/butler. The boats are quite close together with a busy walkway in front, so they're great if you're looking for an authentic Kashmir experience, but not so perfect if privacy is what you're after. But all in all a very good option.
