Alternative Christmas In India

Day 1: Tour Starts in Udaipur

The tour starts early afternoon at Udaipur airport where we will be met and transferred to Castle Bijaipur, approximately 3hrs away. Once we’ve settled in to our magnificent surrounds, we will have our first night’s dinner at the castle.

  • Dinner
Day 2: Castle Bijaipur (Christmas Eve)

Relax at the castle in the run up to Christmas Day. This morning the yoga sessions will begin along with the activities, with horse rides, walks and swimming available. Lunch and dinner will be had at various locations around the castle – by the pool, under the battlements and around campfires.

Day 3: Castle Bijaipur (Christmas Day)

Celebrations at the castle. Start the day with a gentle yoga session on the rooftop – for those that want it - followed by a morning of leisure to read, walk, swim etc. After a glass of champagne we will have an extravagant lunch by the pool. In the afternoon we will organise a walk around the local villages to work off those Christmas calories!

  • Castle Bijaipur
  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Days 4-8: Castle Bijaipur

From here on it’s all about relaxing and recharging, and enjoying this most wonderful of settings. There will be yoga classes for early risers and evening yoga sessions for those who wish to take part. Cooking lessons will also be available on certain days, as will horse rides on the beautiful Marwari Horses, walks and cycle rides. We will also organise a barbeque and a traditional opium ceremony at a local Gujjar village. On one of these days we will de-camp en masse to the beautiful Pangarh lake for a night at the charming lakeside camp. This is a gorgeous setting where the family have set up a tented camp - don’t think mountains tents and roll mats, think Raj-style safari, with beds, linen and full en suite facilities! Those feeling energetic, can take a day’s walk around the lake or even ride the bikes. We will be able to go boating on the lake with the local fishermen and also go swimming. The following morning there’s plenty of time to explore the 16th century fort and the 8th century sun temple, before returning to the castle. (We’ll hold a few rooms at the castle for those not wishing to come to the lake). During our stay there will also be the opportunity to visit the colossal fort at Chittorgarh.

  • Castle Bijaipur and 1 night fixed camp at Pangarh Lake
  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 9: Castle Bijaipur (New Year's Eve)

The day will be free to carry on with the gentler pursuits of life, before the spectacular New Year’s Eve party organised by Wild Frontiers. There will be a special tent erected, traditional Rajasthani dancers, snake charmers, fire-eaters and magicians will perform. The food will be superb and there will be free cocktails. A spectacular fireworks display will explode from the roof of the castle at midnight!

  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 10: Castle Bijaipur - Udaipur (New Year's Day)

We’ll enjoy a relaxing morning at the Castle to ease us into the new year, before taking a leisurely lunch. From here we’ll drive for approximately 3 hours to the beautiful lake front ‘white city’ of Udaipur, often referred to as ‘The Venice of the East’. Depending upon what time we arrive we’ll take a short walking tour of the narrow streets around the old town, before enjoying dinner at a good local restaurant.

  • Karohi Haveli or similar
  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 11: Udaipur

This morning we’ll take a guided tour of some of the key sites in Udaipur such as the City Palace, the Jagdish temple and the beautiful gardens at Saheliyon-ki-Bari. To allow for greater flexibility lunch will be at your own expense today, and this afternoon will be free to wander through the alleys and narrow streets, to take a cooking lesson or a miniature painting class. We’ll meet later in the day to take a sunset boat ride on Lake Pichola, before heading out for a farewell dinner at a local restaurant favoured by Wild Frontiers clients.

As an overall ethos, wherever possible we aim to use characterful accommodation that enhances the overall travel experience, not just offers a bed for the night. This can obviously vary dramatically from country to country and from trip to trip.

Castle Bijaipur is one of our favourite spots in India and the focus of many of our trips to the region. All rooms are of a simple but lovely atmospheric standard and although they would not be described as luxury by current Western standards, they all exude charm and character and offer comfortable en suite facilities. In Udaipur we will use a good standard 3 or 4 star hotel. The tented accommodation on Pangarh Lake is located 12kms to the south of Bijaipur village. There are 10 lake-facing Shikar tents which are situated amidst the valleys of the Vindhyachal Ranges. There is a small restaurant at the camp and an 8th century Sun Temple just a short walk away, which is worth a visit during your time there.

Please note that the accommodation mentioned in the itinerary is intended as a guide only and is always subject to availability.

On this tour we will use a bus or mini bus coaster, jeeps, cars and an AC overnight sleeper train.

In Rajasthan the temperatures should be pleasant, much like spring in the Mediterranean or summer in UK; warm, clear days and cool nights. The average daytime temperature is usually between 18-24oC, while the evenings, nights and early mornings can be chilly with temperatures ranging from 5-10oC. It should be said there is limited heating in the bedrooms at Castle Bijaipur so a pair of warm pyjamas and some warm layers for the early mornings/late evenings are advised.

Is this trip for me?

It may sound obvious but Wild Frontiers tours are not always for everyone and it is important to us that the tour you choose is the most suitable. Please therefore take time to read the itinerary carefully. All our tours are graded to give an overall picture of the trip but these are only guidelines and you should check the daily itinerary. In certain instances we may ask you to complete a travel questionnaire before confirming your booking in order to ensure your suitability. Should you have any concerns about your ability to partake in any aspect of the tour then please contact the office.

Key aspects to consider

Anyone in a reasonable state of health, with an open mind and a sense of adventure should be perfectly able to cope with this tour, as many of the activities are optional.

If you have more time available, why not arrive early to adjust to a new time zone or just to get a feel for the country before your tour starts? Or alternatively you might choose to allow a few extra days after the tour to relax or to undertake some further exploration.

The choice is completely yours and we can usually arrange anything from simply additional accommodation and transfers to full tailor-made itineraries.

Below is just a small sample of what you could do. Please contact the office for more details and to discuss your individual requirements.

Enjoy a 3 day trip to the pink city of Jaipur to visit the Amber Fort, Royal Observatory and City Palace. This could also be combined with a couple of nights in the blue city of Jodhpur with a visit to the imposing Mehrangarh Fort

Fly north for a 4 day trip to Amritsar to marvel at the Golden Temple and witness the unique Wagah border ceremony

Fly south to Aurangabad for a 3 day extension, visiting the impressive UNESCO listed Ellora and Ajanta caves

Head south to spend a few days relaxing on the beaches of Goa or Kerala

Responsible travel

Responsible travel and sustainable tourism are fundamental ideas that Wild Frontiers has been committed to since our birth. It is our strong belief that these words should not be simply ‘tagged on’ to itineraries and websites but should be at the very core of each trip, and our adventures are therefore designed with the local people, culture and eco-system in mind. We believe that a successful trip not only delivers a unique and unsurpassable journey for our clients, but that it also benefits the peoples whose lands we are privileged to visit.

Getting There

If you would like us to send you a quote for the suggested tour flights or on any alternative flight that may suit you better, please let us know, noting that for our US clients, we will most likely refer you to one of our preferred partners. For this trip our suggested flights from the UK (subject to change) are shown below.

If you wish to arrange your own flights you are completely free to do so and in this case we can arrange any transfers or supplementary accommodation that you may require. However please note that if you are planning on making your own flight arrangements, we recommend that you first check with us to see if the trip is guaranteed. We then suggest that you purchase flights that are flexible and ideally refundable as due to the nature of adventure travel, itineraries and destination accessibility can change at any time. For this tour UK passport holders currently require a visa for India.

Key information

Tour price

All our tours are priced on a land-only basis, giving you maximum flexibility when deciding how to get to and from your tour. For the latest prices, please refer to our website or contact the office.

A £500 (or equivalent) deposit is required to confirm your booking.

Travelling Solo & single supplement

As a company approximately 70% of our clients are solo travellers, so it’s very unlikely you’ll be alone!

Our prices are typically based on twin-share accommodation but single supplements are not compulsory for any Wild Frontiers tour. If you prefer not to pay a single supplement we’ll pair you with someone else of the same sex for you to share with throughout the trip.

On this trip, if you do opt to pay for a single supplement then please note that it will cover you for all nights of the tour except of course on the overnight train.

Please note that paying a single supplement entitles you to lone occupancy of a single room. In many cases these rooms will be of the same size as a double/twin room, but in some cases they may be smaller.

Insurance that provides cover for emergency repatriation in case of a medical emergency is compulsory for all tours. You should be aware that due to some of the geographical areas visited and some of the activities included on certain of our trips some standard insurance policies may not always provide adequate cover. As such we strongly recommend that you purchase a policy that adequately covers your trip. If you choose to purchase the Wild Frontiers bespoke policy through Travel & General (currently available to UK residents only) then please note for this trip the minimum required level of cover will be the Standard policy. Please see the Insurance section for more details.
