Bariloche, or San Carlos de Bariloche as is its official name, is part of the Río Negro province, found in the foothills of the Andes and surrounded by lakes and mountains. Locally it is famous for its skiing, but also high regarded as a destination for sight-seeing, water sports, trekking and climbing. Cerro Catedral is one of the most important ski centres in South America. Tourism, both domestic and international, is the main economic activity of Bariloche all year around. During the summer, beautiful beaches such as Playa Bonita (as well as more secluded ones on Victoria Island) welcome sun-bathers and lake swimmers. The fishing season is another great attraction. Trekking in the mountains, almost completely wild and uninhabited with the exception of a few high-mountain huts, is also a popular activity.
Best experiences

Enjoy a history and nature tour
Enjoy a tour of the town’s most important landmarks including Campanario Hill and the Llao Hotel. The guide will explain how this little mountain village has changed into one of the main travel destinations in Patagonia. End with lunch and a beer tasting.
Hike around Lake Nahuel Huapi
Hike a scenic circuit route along the lake to admire the area’s incredible mountain and lake scenery. There are natural lookout points along the way but arguably the best viewpoint is the top of Mount Campanario so don’t forget your camera.
