Travel Trends: Colombia

8th February 2018

If you’re looking for the hottest new travel destination, look no further than Colombia, South America’s rising star. Here at Wild Frontiers, we've seen a big increase in travellers to South America, and Colombia is our most popular destination on the continent by far.

You can now fly direct from London to Bogota with Avianca, cutting down travel times significantly and avoiding the hassle of changing planes, while the peace deal that was agreed with the country’s Farc rebels in June last year has brought increased safety and stability to the region. All this means that a country that has long appealed to travellers with its Caribbean beaches, coffee plantations and colonial cities is back on travel wish lists.

Colombia Hot List

Taste some of the world’s best coffee & chocolate

Colombia is one of the world’s largest coffee and chocolate producers, and its produce is considered to be some of the best around. Take a tour of a coffee or cacao plantation, learn about the process from planting to the packaging, and of course try a cup or some chocolatey treats yourself. Chocoholics will be excited to hear we are launching a 14 day Colombia chocolate tour with Amelia Rope, which will depart on 25th August 2018.

Discover Colonial Cartagena

One of the best-preserved colonial cities in South America, Cartegena is the place to admire the colourful old town architecture, walk the same streets as Colombia’s most famous literary export Gabriel Garcia Marquez and sip a cocktail as you people watch from a bar in a leafy plaza.

Explore Tayrona National Park

A must for both beach bums and active travellers, Tayrona National Park is 12,000 hectares of stunning sandy beaches and lush rainforest. Laze on the Caribbean coast, snorkel in the azure waters or take a jungle walk.

Stargaze in the Tatacoa Desert

Explore this bizarre desert landscape with its surreal rock formations. Experience an amazing sunset with the light bouncing off the vivid red rocks and then pay a visit to the observatory where you can take a walk with a local astronomer in one of the best places for star gazing in Colombia.

Explore South America

It’s not just Colombia that’s having a moment among adventurous travellers. South America has seen a real boom in tourism over the last year, with British Airways introducing the following direct flights making it much easier to visit:

  • London to Santiago, Chile
  • London to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
  • London to San Paulo, Brazil
  • London to Lima, Peru

South America offers great variety and good value for money with huge diversity from country to country, from stunning sandy beaches and Amazonian rainforest to cosmopolitan cities and ancient civilisations enticing travellers to make return visits. We’ve seen big increases in bookings to Bolivia and Peru, while our Three Guianas recce tour to Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana has completely sold out.

So, with Chile, Peru and Argentina all making it onto travel hotlists for 2018, and Colombia soaring in popularity, maybe this is the year you should book a trip to South America.
