Tour leader Max checks in after taking to horseback to continue along the Kyrgyzstan Celestial Mountain Action Adventure tour...
After over a tough 60 or so miles on mountain bikes, we spent a night in a comfortable hotel in Naryn. The next day we drove out for an hour to meet our horses and horsemen for the 2 day ride to Son Kul lake. Out tour guide, Tommy, was an excellent rider, having ridden since he was a youngster. The group contained a mixture of near beginners and experienced riders but all were able to canter and gallop at least some of the way over the 40 miles we covered to our yurt camp near the lake.
The first day was slightly shorter, moving through more enclosed valleys, at times punctuated with sharp ascents. Lunch on the first day was at a particularly beautiful site with stunning panoramic views. We arrived at our wild camp at about 17:30 - giving time to relax and enjoy the pleasant surroundings as a stream curved around our pitched tents.
Next morning we began to climb immediately; the road zig-zags up in 32 hairpin bends but the horses took a more direct route. Again, glorious views as we reached the pass before descending slowly to reach the high plateau on which Son Kul lake is situated. This left a flat 20 miles for after lunch on our second day and the group spread out as some reflected on the scenery and others galloped into the distance.
