Another exciting year in the world of adventure travel has passed, so we thought we would roundup our highlights of 2018.

Most popular new destination: Papua New Guinea

2018 saw the introduction of our first ever trips to Papua New Guinea. Being one of the least explored countries in the world, the majority of its population continues to live and practice the rural traditions of their ancestors.

We would have to agree with Wild Frontiers client Kathryn, who said our tour was “The wildest, most exciting & adventurous trip I have ever been on and I have been travelling for 50 years.”

Hot destination for 2019: Bulgaria

When thinking of a ‘hot’ new travel destination South-eastern Europe may not immediately spring to mind. However, Bulgaria is proven to have it all, from stunning mountain scenery (including a wealth of UNESCO World Heritage Sites) to Black Sea beaches. Bordering Greece, Turkey, Romania, Serbia and Macedonia, it is a cultural melting pot, with a rich heritage of traditional dance, music, costumes, and crafts. Moreover, Bulgaria’s twin capital Plovdiv has recently been chosen to be the European Capital of Culture for 2019.

If this has sparked your interest and you would like to explore what Bulgaria has to offer, then contact our team regarding our Walking in Bulgaria Tour.

Sporting event of the year: The World Nomad Games

Whilst we all loved the World Cup this summer, there is no buzz that can compare to watching two men brutally wrestling on horseback (otherwise known as Er Enish). That’s right; the World Nomad Games in Kyrgyzstan has taken our top spot for sporting event of the year. Other exhilarating events at the games include Kok Boru, where teams on horseback throw a dead sheep or goat into their opponent’s well on a playing field; and Burkut Saluu, hunting with eagles and dogs.

If you would like to get the most out of your trip to Kyrgyzstan, then come along with Wild Frontiers.

Blog of the year

We received so many amazing blogs this year from you our travellers, our team members and our tour leaders; but this from Wild Frontiers clients Kit and Luke makes for an interesting read. In a year that Donald Trump reimposed sanctions on Iran, Kit and Luke wrote about their surprising experiences visiting Iran as Americans. Click here to have a read.

Photo of the year

This snap by client Siobhan Lavery of the skeleton warriors on our Tribal Lands of Papua New Guinea tour beat some fierce photographic competition to become photo of the year 2018.

Meet the Locals - The Kathakali Dancer

This year we met Venu Shenoi, a traditional Kathakali dancer from Kerala, Southern India. Here he talks about his struggles finding a wife and how he prepares for an encapsulating performance.

Foundation news of the year

2018 was the year that people became conscious of their single use plastic consumption. We at Wild Frontiers decided to confront the plastic crisis by introducing our filtered water bottle campaign, where we partnered with ‘Water-To-Go’ and asked you, our travellers, to consider using our discounted filtered water bottles. We estimate that this initiative has cut down our plastic usage by 10,000 bottles, so thanks to everyone who has got on board!

If you would like to purchase one of our Wild Frontiers water bottles then simply click here (you may need to sign up to our website but don’t worry, it’s free).

Thank you all for choosing to travel with Wild Frontiers and for your continued support – roll on 2019!
