This trip gives visitors the unique opportunity to venture deep into the equatorial rainforest of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Kahuzi-Biega National Park and trek to see the small population of Eastern Lowland Gorillas. Your host in the DRC will be renowned gorilla conservationist and philanthropist John Kahekwa who is one of the world’s leading authorities on the Eastern Lowland Gorilla and recipient of the 2016 Prince William Award from the wildlife charity TUSK. As well as taking you to see the gorillas, John will take you to see some of the projects supported by the Pole Pole Foundation – a charity he founded to help improve the lives of people living in the area. John will ensure that your three days in the DRC are a truly magical experience which will allow you to see all sides of life in this mysterious and misunderstood Central African country.
As the international flights for this trip are in and out of Rwanda’s capital Kigali, it would be remiss of us not to include some time in one of Rwanda’s stunning National Parks. The drive from Kigali to the border at Bukavu takes you through the Nyungwe Forest National Park so after your time in the DRC you will spend three nights here before heading back to Kigali. This is the best spot in Rwanda to trek to see chimpanzees which is a wonderful experience and will complement the gorilla trekking that you enjoyed in the DRC. The lodge here is one of the best in all of Rwanda so will make for a great spot to spend a few days unwinding after what will have been a short but busy stay in the DRC.
*Please note the above price is per person and based on two persons sharing a twin or double room
Visit the gorillas if you can; it's a once in a lifetime experience. You've got a great chance of seeing them and, although it's not cheap, part of the cost goes towards their preservation.
