Mount Roraima Trek (Extension)

Day 1: Puerto Ordaz - Santa Elena

Day 1: From Puerto Ordaz you will be transferred by private vehicle to the far south-east of the country, travelling past the vast wilderness of the Gran Sabana en route to Santa Elena. On arrival you will then check in to your basic but comfortable posada for the evening, located just a short walk from the centre of the town. (B)

Day 2: Santa Elena - Parai Tepuy

Day 2: Leaving this morning with your porters and guide you'll head to Parai Tepuy, to begin the eight hour trek towards the Kukenan River. Most of this first day's journey takes you through flat savanna land, where small hills and easy descents make for a genteel start. After crossing both the Tek and Kukenan Rivers, you'll then continue on towards the base camp, located at some 2,000 metres, where the vegetation starts to give way to more dense jungle that encroaches onto the walls of the tepuy. (B,L,D)

Day 3: Parai Tepuy - Mount Roraima

Day 3: After the more gentle inclines of yesterday today provides a more physical challenge, as you tackle the ascent up towards the top of Mount Roraima. Negotiating your way up a natural incline, the five hour ascent takes you through some mesmerising scenery, where the landscapes are blanketed in a profusion of orchids. Arriving on top of the plateau, you'll camp this evening amongst the natural shelters that have been formed in the rock face itself. (B,L,D)

Days 4-5: Mount Roraima

Day 4: A day spent exploring the summit of this magnificent setting sees you navigating hidden valleys, tranquil lagoons and cascading streams, amidst a landscape of quite breathtaking and serene beauty. The trail leads you across a bizarre geological landscape, filled with surreal rock formations and captivating jungle that is a haven for a unique collection of rare flora including pitcher plants, Rapatea heather and dazzling bellflowers. (B,L,D)

Day 5: The highest of the Pakaraima chain of tepuy plateaus in South America, Mount Roraima is bounded on all sides by 400 metre high cliffs and straddles the borders of Venezuela, Brazil and Guyana. Today you will take a hike towards the Tek River, to take in the vast expanse of this magical scenery. From the summit, the views out across the crystal clear valleys evoke all the splendour and majesty of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's “Lost World”. (B,L,D)

Day 6: Mount Roraima - Parai Tepuy

Day 6: After a final photo opportunity from the summit, you'll depart the plateau after breakfast this morning, heading down towards the next campsite at Parai Tepuy. Day's end then provides a chance to enjoy a swim in the river, basking in the glorious views of Kukenan and Roraima tepuys, before you settle down for a final night under canvas. (B,L,D)

Day 7: Parai Tepuy - Santa Elena

Day 7: Transfer back to Santa Elena, to spend a final night in Gran Sabana. (B,L,D)

Day 8: Santa Elena - Puerto Ordaz

Day 8: The overland journey back to Puerto Ordaz provides opportunities to stop at waterfalls and local communities, before reaching the end of your journey. (B,L)
