SUGGESTED ACCOMMODATION
Icehotel, Kiruna
Staying at the world famous and iconic Icehotel in Swedish Lapland is truly a memorable experience. Icehotel is a hotel and an art exhibition with ever-changing art made out of ice and snow. The hotel is created in a new guise every winter, completely made out of natural ice from Torne River, one of Sweden’s national rivers and last untouched waters. The hotel is located in the small village of Jukkasjärvi with only 1000 inhabitants, 200 km north of the Arctic Circle, and backs onto the river Torne. Both warm, and of course, cold rooms are on offer. The warm rooms are well-equipped with bright, modern and fresh furnishings typically Scandinavian in style with en-suite bathrooms. The ice rooms vary in design from simple, plain rooms to dramatic, artistic displays. Sleep on ice beds within a thermal sleeping bag, you will be quite cosy but if in the morning you feel a little chilled, you can warm up in the sauna. Washing facilities are located close to the ice rooms. Icehotel offers a variety of winter activities, two restaurants giving a choice of high-end gastronomy or more rustic fare, and the Absolute Bar. r.
Abisko Mountain Lodge, Abisko
Located some 90 kilometres from Kiruna and ideal for helicopter tours, cross-country skiing and husky safaris, this remote haven has been described as Sweden’s first genuine mountain lodge. Encompassing a small hotel and a number of two-storey rustic cabins that sleep four people, rooms in the main hotel building include twin beds, en suite showers and wireless broadband. Guests also have access to a spacious drying room for wet clothing and the restaurant Brasserie Fjällköket that serves up an array of locally sourced delicacies including king crab, salted Lofoten cob and fresh mountain berries. Here the staff are always on call for guests whether they want to order a coffee or talk about the day's adventures. In the lobby you can unwind after a day outdoors, or you can sit down and compare adventures with like-minded travellers, meeting new friends or read your book in a comfy arm-chair.
Brändön Lodge, Lulea
Set on an island overlooking the frozen waters and scattered islands of the Luleå archipelago, Brändön Lodge is an adventure camp offering a choice of 15 newly renovated cabins. A short drive of about 35 minutes to the north of Luleå takes you through farming land and forest to the coast overlooking the islands of the Luleå archipelago and the Bay of Bothnia. This area is traditionally a farming, fishing and forest community with strong historical and cultural ties to the islands of the archipelago. Each cabin comes equipped with a bathroom, two twin-bed rooms, a lounge area and a front facing covered porch. The camp’s main building includes a restaurant and relaxing lounge, and guests are provided winter clothing to make the most of the spectacular landscapes that surround it. In the summer there is a small cosy sand beach where you can enjoy the sun and a small boat harbour from where you can start exploring the archipelago. Activities include tours of the pack ice by hovercraft and spectacular snowmobile safaris across the metre-thick ice of the frozen archipelago.
