SUGGESTED ACCOMMODATION
Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge, Machu Picchu
The Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge was an Orient Express property now managed by the high-end Belmond group and has a truly privileged location. Just a few metres from the entrance to Machu Picchu, guests can be one of the first to enter or last to leave the ruins. Adhering to strict planning permission, the hotel has just 31 intimately sized rooms and suites with varying views, some of which have patios that open out onto the garden. The small garden features orchids and hummingbirds, providing a bit of relief from the bustle of tourists outside the hotel during the day, as well as a small outdoor jacuzzi. There are two onsite restaurants: one serving a buffet lunch, popular with the day-trippers to the ruins; and the other serving a buffet breakfast and an a la carte lunch and dinner, providing a more secluded option during peak lunch hours. Although maintaining Belmond's characteristically impeccable service, what you are really paying for is the location.
Sol y Luna Lodge and Spa, Sacred Valley
The Relais & Châteaux, Sol y Luna property is a rustic yet luxurious hotel with 38 spacious and beautifully decorated suites and bungalows, spread amongst the manicured grounds of the hotel. The casitas each have a living room, separate bedroom, walk-in closet and marble tiled bathroom; some even have a Jacuzzi on the terrace. The split-level bungalows are very spacious and colourful, reflective of the bright flowers in the surrounding gardens, and are perfect for families. The owner is very involved in local community development and there is an onsite boutique shop selling locally-made handicrafts and the like. The main building houses the Killa Wasi restaurant with mezzanine bar and a pool on the terrace outside. Much like the hotel, the restaurant has a formidable reputation of being one of the best in the area, but by no means is pretentious. There is also a fantastic spa on the property and horses’ stables, as the hotel keeps its own Peruvian horses and even puts on a show most days at the ‘Rancha’. The Sol y Luna is a delightful place to stay offering tranquillity, positivity, luxury and quality.
Colca Lodge, Colca Canyon
At 3,250 above sea level and just three and a half hours from Arequipa, the Colca Lodge hotel is located on the banks of the River Colca, surrounded by hundreds of pre-Inca terraces that have been declared part of Peru’s cultural heritage and contain relaxing thermal springs rich in lithium. This is a space full of energy, in harmony with nature and is the starting point from which to explore the valley and Colca Canyon, one of the deepest in the world. The lodge has 45 rooms which are fairly simple but comfortable and face the river valley. This is a great spot from which to enjoy the activities available in the surrounding areas.
Hotel B, Lima
Hotel B is our favourite boutique four star hotel option in Lima. Situated in Barranco – the beating heart of the city’s art scene – modern art adorns the walls of this stylish property. Formerly a colonial home for president Leguia (1920s), the building has been elegantly refurbished with contemporary rooms either side of a pleasant courtyard, where breakfast is served. There is a bar and superb restaurant which blends traditional Peruvian ingredients with Mediterranean flavours. There are plenty of galleries and shopping opportunities nearby, as well as access to the beach. This beautiful property is a great experience for any special occasions such as anniversaries, honeymoon or birthdays.
Titilaka, Puno
The five star Titilaka is by far the most luxurious way of experiencing Lake Titicaca. This is an exclusive lodge situated on a secluded part of the lake with 18 ‘dusk’ or ‘dawn’ suites boasting spectacular views and modern touches such as heated floors and I-pod docks. There is a wonderful spa and intimate dining room, or you can choose to dine in the privacy of your own room. All excursions are included and the options are varied – from mountain biking to kayaking, trekking to bird-watching, or simply take in the sunset on the lakeside terrace with a cocktail.
Cirqa, Arequipa
Cirqa is the latest edition to the list of outstanding Relais & Chateaux properties found in Peru and is set in a building dating back to 1540, the same year the city itself was founded. The city's most high-end option a stone’s throw from the central Plaza de Armas, this five-star hotel boasts absolute luxury and an incredible location. The owners of the renowned Titilaka Lodge have brought this 11-room accommodation to Arequipa offering an outstanding, personable service. Maintaining the building’s history and character, the hotel features a rustic look with exposed brick filled with designer furniture throughout. To echo the impressive, volcanic sillar rock walls, rooms have natural-coloured furniture; warm, cosy lighting; high ceilings; and stylish minimalist bathrooms. Five-star mod cons are a given, including the finest linens; organic, tailormade amenities; and a smart HDTV with Netflix. Hotel facilities include a heated plunge pool on one of the outdoor patios, a therapy spa room and a salon, including a lounge area and dining room serving the best of Arequipeño cuisine, one of the most celebrated culinary regions in the country. Stays are available on a ‘Half Board’ or a ‘Fully Inclusive Plus’ basis. All stays include a welcome drink, afternoon tea and complimentary snacks and a beverage hamper. Please note that some of the 'Claustro' rooms do not feature windows but rather a window panel in the door and the some of the 'Boveda' rooms are designed with a wall complete floor to ceiling glass looking out to the patio.
Tocuyeros Boutique Hotel, Cusco
Hidden on a tiny colonial plaza in the San Blas District of Cusco, Tocuyeros Boutique Hotel is a unique lodging option in this classic city. The entrance alone is an experience, as you pass through an illuminated stone tunnel that leads to a shady patio and a completely peaceful oasis, where personalized service, a top notch chef and spacious rooms all await. The two common areas overlook the red roofs and historic churches of Cusco, and guests can enjoy a range of delicious local food in the hotel's excellent on-site restaurant - Refugio. With just 9 en suite rooms, the service is always intimate and you feel like you're staying in a home away from home. With its close proximity to the central plaza and nearby galleries, restaurants and shops, Tocuyeros is the most comfortable boutique hotel in San Blas and a beautiful way to enjoy the culture and history of Cusco.
