Known as the 'Valley of One Thousand Kasbahs', here you will find endless oases and palmeries scattered with an abundance of historic kasbahs, once used as refuges and places of defence when the cities were under attack. Also known as Vallee des Roses, visit here in spring and see the valley explode in a riot of pink, with the Rose Festival taking place in May. Including the spectacular scenery of the Dades Valley and Todra Gorge, here you will find some of Morocco's most beautiful oasis towns and mesmerising kasbahs often built on hilltops. Skoura is a great place to overnight after spending some time in the desert, set within the gorgeous landscapes of the Dades Valley. It is fed by two rivers, keeping the land lush and fertile with palm trees, which contain hidden kasbahs and hotels. Head further north and you'll come across the famous town of Ouarzazate. 'Come to Ouarzazate and die.' This old expression refers to the town's remoteness: once you had been here you had been everywhere and even today it still feels isolated. Ouarzazate used to be the last outpost, before the inhospitable desert opened out before you. Originally a French garrison town, it was and still is a welcome sight after the hardship of crossing the High Atlas. Today Ouarzazate has developed hugely, mostly in part due to the fame of the area's most famous kasbah - Ait Ben Haddou. Now a recognised UNESCO site, here you can explore the intricacies and atmosphere of this clay village up-close and see why it's been used as the set of famous films like The Mummy, Babel and Gladiator.
