Home to a famous castle, a Samurai quarter and a fascinating Geisha district, Kanazawa enjoys a historical pedigree that can trace its origins back centuries. The air raids of the Second World War and the arrival of modernisation has not robbed the town of its old charms and its architectural heritage and its high quality artisan crafts have seen it recognised by UNESCO. One of the town’s most prized assets is the exceptional Kenrokuen Garden, considered one of the finest anywhere in Japan, whose spacious grounds were cultivated by the ruling Maeda family over a period of nearly two hundred years. The town can also boast a number of restored old residences and modern museums, along with the historic delights of the Nagamachi and Higashi Chaya neighbourhoods.
