When visiting Shirakawa-go it is highly recommended to stay in a classic, traditionally gassho farmhouse which replicate little thatched gingerbread houses. This way, guests can truly experience the rural life that has existed in this Japanese region for hundreds of years. Ootaya has an incredible 200 year old history and features just 5 basic tatami guest rooms. It’s a short walk up hill from the bus station and has a hot spring located down the road overlooking the turquoise river. Simple yet comfortable, the rooms are perfect for a short visit to the village. Sharing facilities are provided here too. The homestay includes breakfast and dinner of homemade rustic meals served by the owners who speak little English. At night when the tourists have gone, the atmosphere turns peaceful and this is when guests fully engage with this authentic experience.
