Hidatei Hanaougi, Takayama

Hidatei Hanaougi is one of the top ryokans, or traditional inns, in the rural city of Takayama. Its architecture showcases famous native timbers including Japanese zelkova, thought to have a relaxing effect. There are 48 rooms available, with design balancing the traditional and the new. Pad across tatami flooring and recline on comfy futons (Western-style beds are available). Some rooms feature an open-air bath to sink into, set within an elegant zen garden.
