A spectacular journey that crosses timeless desert landscapes that still cling to the traditions of the past, this astonishing adventure takes us deep into the cultural heartlands of eastern Iran.
Encompassing ruined desert cities, ancient cave dwellings and some of the finest Islamic architecture anywhere in the world, we explore a region that is rapidly crumbling against the onslaught of the modern world. Beginning in Mashhad we have an opportunity to visit the revered shrine of Imam Reza, before we head out across the vast barren landscapes of the Lut Desert and into a world filled with ancient aquifers, hilltop fortresses and a rich heritage that has endured for generations.
Spending much of our time enjoying the hospitality of the local people, we’ll watch the sunset over the kaluts (a dramatic desert geological comprising ridges and hollowed-out rocks) and visit the once great city of Bam, discover the beautiful Shazdeh Gardens in Mahan and spend time exploring the remarkable architectural treasures of Kerman, Yazd and Isfahan.

Tours that fall into this category will often involve remote, unpredictable and long journeys in emerging destinations. They can be incredibly rewarding but are definitely best suited to experienced travellers.
You can typically expect a mixture of accommodation with some nights being spent in comfortable and characterful places, and some in more basic places, homestays or camping, especially where choices are limited.
These tours will typically involve a couple of days of easy/moderate trekking (3-5 hrs/day) or perhaps a more active approach to a cultural itinerary. For riding trips see the Riding Information section
With this rating, you can typically expect a tour with a good balance between exploring cultural sights (such as museums and historical buildings) on some days and experiencing the wonders of the great outdoors on other days.
