Start your day by exploring the fascinating Old Delhi area, where you will walk past old crumbling havelis, see vibrant street food stalls, visit the famous Jama Masjid mosque and wander through colourful markets. Continue to the imposing Red Fort, one of the most important buildings of Mughal architecture from that period. In complete contrast to the medieval Old Delhi, New Delhi stands in formal splendour; a city of wide boulevards offering ever-changing perspectives of Lutyens' landscaped city. Highlights include Rashtrapati Bhawan, India Gate and Humayun's Tomb, architecturally considered the forerunner of the Taj Mahal, as well as a visit to the Sikh temple of Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, where you can also visit the community kitchen where thousands are fed delicious food every day. This evening you will be met at your hotel by one of our specialist historians for an informal talk on the History of Rajputana. The talk has been designed to give you an historical insight into Rajputana nobility and their forts and palaces, some of which you will visit during your trip.
DAY 3: DELHI - AGRA

DAY 3: DELHI - AGRA
This morning you will be transferred to Agra, a journey of approximately four hours. This afternoon your guide will then take you to visit the magnificent Agra Fort, built by the Mughal emperor Akbar. This fortified citadel overlooks the banks of the Yamuna River, and served as the headquarters of the Mughal Empire when Agra was its capital. Continue on to a less-visited part of Agra to then enjoy a Mughal heritage walk through the farming community of Kachhpura, led by a USAID-trained specialist guide. The walk ends with some refreshments on the rooftop of a local home where you can enjoy watching the sunset and catch a glimpse of the beautiful Taj Mahal across the river in the far distance.

This is an extraordinary time of day to visit, as the soft sunlight hits the exquisite marble relief work and semi-precious stones, resulting in a stunning blend of light and colour. The Taj Mahal is considered one of the greatest achievements of Indo-Islamic architecture, and no matter how many times you have seen images of this spectacular edifice, nothing can prepare you for its sheer magnificence. Return to your hotel for breakfast, after which you will be collected from your hotel and driven to Fort Barwara, a 14th century Rajput complex of palaces, temples and a fort. The journey should take around six hours, depending on road conditions.

On this walk, you will explore these stories and other interesting anecdotes about the Rajputana architecture. At the same time, learn about the sensitive use of horticulture where only endemic flora is used to recreate the beauty of the lost wild landscapes of Rajasthan. This evening you will then get the chance to experience a temple puja, taking place in one of the oldest temples in the area. Located in the Zenana Mahal, the heritage wing of our 14th-century Fort, the temple is dedicated to Radha and Krishna. His vision was to create a water reservoir which would harvest the monsoon rains. It was an ambitious project and a great drain on his resources, but Thakur Chhatra Singh remained true to his vision. The dam was completed in 1890 and changed the dry scrub into prime agricultural land. Farmers struggling for sustenance on parched lands were invited by Thakur Chhatra Singh to settle around the reservoir, named Chhatra Sagar in his memory. The area has now developed into a lush green oasis with wide open spaces and enchanting views, and is now home to a stunning luxury camp that you will call home for the next two nights.
