Rawla Khempur (AKA the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) is a charming heritage hotel situated in the countryside about an hour north of Udaipur. Although not as posh as some of its nearby competitors it is a place with real charm and character and represents either a great rural stop before hitting the wonders of Udaipur, or as a convenient alternative to staying in town. Original famed for its stud of fine Marwari horses, the palace is still home to a number of dancing stallions, a feat performed (if requested) outside the stables in front of the main palace every evening, to the delight of the owner and equine enthusiast, Rao Hemant Singh. The hotel consists of 12 comfortable rooms, each of which are en suite and carry an equine theme – horse head coat hooks and the like – it has a number of quiet nooks and crannies and a lovely rooftop terrace. Made famous by the British film, the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Rawla Khempur it has offered accommodation to such stars as Judy Dench, Maggie Smith and Bill Nighy… so why not you?
