Following the success of the village treks near Lalibela, four new sites have recently opened up in sandstone mountains north of Gheralta, opening up the Northern Tigray region to some fabulous trekking. As with the Lalibela sites, accommodation is simple yet clean and a great chance to appreciate Ethiopia in its natural form. You'll sleep in a traditional Hedemo, a rectangular compound that is the design for most farmhouses in the area. These are built of local stone and blend into the surroundings with flat roof, which are often used as a terrace. There is no electricity but you will be provided with gas lamps. There are three bedrooms at each Hedemo, and each bedroom has a single and a double bed. There is also a shower, eco toilet and sink per site but these are shared. Views are superb, and the experience is made even better in the knowledge that your money is going directly into the local community who look after you.
When visiting the Simien Mountains, take binoculars - they're great for spotting Ibex and Gelada baboons.
