The Amazon basin, the greatest rainforest habitat in the world, hardly needs an introduction. Covering 7 million square kilometres, it is home to one quarter of the world’s plant and animal species, more than 200 indigenous cultures and spans the countries of Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, French Guyana and Suriname. The Amazon also provides one of the planet’s greatest conservation challenges as this fragile eco-system is constantly threatened by human impact. The main port of entry into the Ecuadorian Amazon is the town of Tena where there are rainforest lodges found at various distances from it requiring either land or boat transfers or a combination of both. Another town set in the rainforest is Coca, a gateway to a few remote lodge stays.
Best experiences

Get up into the rainforest canopy
Just 20 minutes from La Selva Lodge is an observation tower that rises 120 ft above the forest. Your naturalist guide will help with wildlife spotting and, upon return, can introduce you to medicinal Amazonian plants along the Tucaneta Trail
See parrots by the hundreds
Take a motorised canoe to a parrot clay lick on the Napo River to see a fascinating display of the wild world. Hundreds of colourful parrots and parakeets gather here to eat the mineral rich soil, an important part of their diet.
