Infused with a history that can trace its ancestry back to the Ancient Thracians, Bulgaria’s untamed landscapes hark back to a time of rich discovery and adventure. Beginning in the capital we will get a chance to discover some of Sofia's highlights before beginning the journey to the spectacular scenery of the Central Balkan Mountains. We’ll ultimately explore four distinct mountain regions and traverse a land filled with glacial lakes and tangled forests, where wolves and ears still hunt amongst the dark interiors. We’ll visit Thracian tombs, medieval fortresses and charming hilltop towns, where we’ll enjoy the traditions and hospitality of the locals. Hikes amongst the Rhodope Mountains and the Melnik Pyramids in the winelands of southwestern Bulgaria are interspersed with cultural visits before moving on to Bansko and the marble slopes of the Pirin Mountains.
Finally after taking in the stunning UNESCO setting of Rila Monastery and enjoying the panoramas of the Seven Lakes in the Rila Mountains we’ll head back to the capital to enjoy some time at your own leisure where you might like to venture to the outskirts of Sofia and visit Boyana Church before beginning the journey home.

ACCOMMODATION USED ON THIS TOUR
Hotel Sveta Sofia, Sofia
The 68-room Hotel Sveta Sofia is found on one of Sofia’s main high streets, a five-minute walk from the Serdika metro station and perfectly located for exploring the city’s shops, restaurants and landmark buildings. Despite its location, in the heart of the bustling city, the rooms and apartments are very spacious with carpeted floors and lively, hotel décor. You’ll find standard furniture, amenities and mod-cons. There is a small, on-site fitness centre free for guest use, and a sauna available for use at a surcharge. Guests may have complimentary, one-time access to a city spa and pool, please ask the reception for more information. There is also an indoor restaurant, where breakfast is served.
Tihiyat Kut, Apriltsi
Tihiyat Kut is a lovely, comfortable guesthouse set within some beautiful gardens. Rooms are simply decorated but provide adequate comfort and amenities, all with en suite bathrooms. There is a good on site restaurant serving local dishes, and a great outdoor pool for a refreshing dip at the end of a long day adventuring in the nearby Central Balkan Mountain range.
Hotel Izvora, Veliko Turnovo
Located in the centre of Arbanassi, a village around 15 minutes out of Veliko Tarnovo, the hotel is a quaint option with plenty of local personality. The Izvora has 23 double rooms, a single, two studios and four apartments, making it a mid-size hotel with a range of facilities. The complex consists of architecture typical of the region, one summer and two winter gardens, an outdoor pool and lounging area, and a “mini zoo”. For a bit of pampering guests also have use of a sauna, steam bath and infrared cabins. A draw for locals is the tavern that was awarded ‘Restaurant of the Year’ in 2003 and serves regional cuisine both inside and outside, as well as occasional entertainment, and lots of local character. The ensuite rooms are smart and nicely furnished with a classic style.
Alafrangite Hotel, Plovdiv
Designed like an old Plovdiv townhouse, Alafrangite houses just 11 rooms and two junior suite studios. Rooms are described as being modelled after a revival house, although this is mostly evident from the elegant colour scheme and period-style paintings on the wall. Otherwise, the accommodation is clean, generally offers a good amount of space and decorated with a simple elegance found throughout the property. The peaceful, stone garden terrace is filled with aromas of geranium and its café is reserved exclusively for hotel guests. Guests can also enjoy a drink from the lobby bar out on the terrace. The restaurant, a well-known establishment in town serving local dishes in the building next door, offers the best example of a bygone era, with its carved wooden ceilings and wall murals.
Arkan Han Hotel, Trigrad
The traditional wood and stone structure, set in an isolated spot at the base of a mountain and encircled by forests, is truly picturesque. Arkan Han is family-owned and consists of five apartments, three studios, six double rooms and a single. Rooms are somewhat simpler than the rest of the property, but a clear country theme runs throughout it, adding plenty of character. The cowboy atmosphere is enhanced by its location, next to the Arkan Horse Centre, which has ten horses (at the time of writing) and can be used for tours. Amenities within the rooms are limited (hairdryers and irons can be requested from reception) and there are no T.V.s, but this feels as if by design. The surrounding views are exquisite, and some rooms have balconies from which to enjoy them. With no neighbours around, the large gardens open up on to the surrounding forests and alpine mountains, where there are covered, outdoor dining and separate barbecue areas made of rustic stone to allow guests to spend time basking in the fresh mountain air and enjoying a simpler life. Home-made bread and dairy products are served at the restaurant providing further homely touches to a welcoming and relaxing stay. We recommend ordering a drink at the charming bar and enjoying it in an armchair by the open fireplace in the corner.
Leshten Hotel, Leshten
One of the few hotel options in the small village of Leshten, the beautiful building occupies a privileged spot on the edge of the mountainous village, overlooking stunning views of the city below enclosed by snow-capped mountain ranges within eyeline. Inside the building, the architecture continues to excite with carved wooden beams and ceilings, and exposed stone walls around you whilst you enjoy a meal of home-made dishes using fresh local produce from the a-la-carte restaurant. Rooms have a sleeker finish with the typical wood-panelling and are made cosy with natural colours and stylish furniture. The hotel’s extensive ‘Relax Zone’ includes an indoor pool with spectacular views from its floor-to-ceiling windows, a hot tub, a Finnish sauna, a steam bath and an adventure shower, as well as a seasonal outdoor pool with open-air, panoramic views and sunbeds.
Casa Karina Hotel, Bansko
The hotel complex is located at the foot of Pirin Mountain, 150m from the start of the gondola lift, making it a great base for skiers, which the hotel is designed to cater to. Room categories include double rooms, studios and apartments. Accommodation at the hotel is spacious, featuring a simple, elegant design of neutral colours, modern bathrooms, and standard hotel conveniences such as Wi-Fi, a dressing table, a wardrobe and toiletries. The on-site restaurant serves local cuisine, as well as international dishes, and the lobby bar is popular for after-skiing drinks. They would be remiss not to have spa services, given the location, and Casa Karina doesn’t disappoint: as well as offering a menu of treatments, guests can make use of the good-sized, heated indoor pool set with elegant French windows, looking out to the Pirin Mountains and beautiful landscaped courtyard. Additional facilities include a barbecue and entertainment equipment for guests’ use such as billiards, electronic games and a petanque court.
Gorski Kut Hotel, Rila Mountains
Less than a ten-minute drive from the monastery, the Gorski Kut Hotel is a family-run guesthouse occupying a peaceful location surrounded by pristine forest and a flowing river in the Rila Valley. Rooms are built to a modern standard with air-conditioning and heating. They come with simple, classic, wood furniture; pleasant, patterned or floral curtains and bedding; and a private balcony enjoying mountain views, all adding to the tranquillity of the stay. Local food is served at the restaurant, particularly fish given its proximity to a fish farm, which boasts a large, covered summer terrace right above the river.

Key Information
CLIMATE
Bulgaria’s climate can be extreme with scorching summers and intensely cold winters. It is also a predominantly mountainous country with a maximum altitude of 2,925m (Mt Musala in the Rila Mountains) and an average altitude of 470m. As such, the weather can be very changeable and you will need to be prepared for all conditions. We have scheduled our walking trips to Bulgaria for the summer and early autumn when daytime temperatures should be warm in the mountains (20-25C) and trails should be clear of snow but rain and cold are always a possibility.
IS THIS TRIP FOR ME?
It may sound obvious but Wild Frontiers tours are not always for everyone and it is important to us that the tour you choose is the most suitable. All our tours have a fitness rating as a guideline but you should check the day-by-day itinerary carefully. In certain instances we may ask you to complete a travel questionnaire before confirming your booking in order to ensure your suitability. Should you have any concerns about your ability to partake in any aspect of the tour then please contact the office.
KEY ASPECTS TO CONSIDER
This is the perfect tour for those who enjoy fresh air, mountain hikes, great food and mixing with welcoming locals at every turn. While all the walks can be opted out of (and luggage will be transported throughout by minibus) they form a key part of the trip and you should be fit enough to enjoy several days of moderate to strenuous walking (4-6hrs/day on average).
THE NATURE OF ADVENTURE TRAVEL
We feel that it’s worth pointing out that while we will always strive to stick as close to the stated itinerary as possible, it may be necessary from time to time to make changes to our itineraries or services (due to weather, political and religious influences etc.) and this can happen with little or no notice. This unpredictability can be one of the most exciting aspects of adventure travel and for many of our clients often leads to unexpected highlights as the tour-leader necessarily adapts the tour to the changing conditions. However we are aware that this lack of assuredness may not suit everyone. As such, with the greatest respect, if you are someone who needs to know that everything will happen exactly as planned, we would kindly suggest that perhaps our tours are not for you. Adventure travel can be infectious and once you’ve caught the bug, it is likely to never leave you, but especially if this is your first such tour we would strongly urge you to give us a call if you have any concerns whatsoever about your suitability for this trip.
TRAVELLING SOLO AND SINGLE SUPPLEMENTS
As a company approximately 70% of our clients are solo travellers, so it’s very unlikely you’ll be alone!
Our prices are typically based on twin-share accommodation but single supplements are not compulsory for any Wild Frontiers tour. If you prefer not to pay a single supplement we’ll pair you with someone else of the same sex for you to share with throughout the trip.
On this trip, if you do opt to pay for a single supplement then please note that it will cover you for all nights of the tour.
Please note that paying a single supplement entitles you to lone occupancy of a single room. In many cases these rooms will be of the same size as a double/twin room, but in some cases they may be smaller.
INSURANCE
Insurance that provides cover for emergency repatriation in case of a medical emergency is compulsory for all tours. You should be aware that due to some of the geographical areas visited and some of the activities included on certain of our trips some standard insurance policies may not always provide adequate cover. As such we strongly recommend that you purchase a policy that adequately covers your trip. Please see the Insurance section for more details.
