Bhutan: Land of the Thunder Dragon - Map & Itinerary

Tour starts in Paro

Day 1

This morning the tour will start in Paro. We will then transfer to Thimphu, Bhutan's capital, and most modern and developed city.

In Thimphu (2400m)

Day 2

We have a full day to explore Thimphu with visits to the Cultural Heritage Museum, Takin Park and Dechen Phodrang Monastery.

Thimphu - Gangtey (2700m)

Day 3

Our scenic drive today takes us over the Dochu La Pass, through mountain forests to the Phobjika Valley in Gangtey.

In Gangtey

Day 4

Today we stroll from Gangtey Monastery through the local villages in the Phobjika Valley taking in the lifestyle and culture of the people.

Gangtey - Bumthang (2700m)

Day 5

We drive via Trongsa visiting the monastery and later a a local textile outlet en route to the Bumthang region.

Chokhor Valley

Day 6

Today we will walk to Kharsumphey and Tamshing villages with good views of Kurje Lhakhang on the other side of the Chamkhar River and enjoy a local style lunch at a farm.

Chokhor Valley - Tang Valley

Day 7

A full day's hike today will take us between two of the famous valleys in Bumthang, passing Padselling Monastery on our way to the Tang Valley and our homestay.

In the Tang Valley

Day 8

Our challenging yet rewarding trek today will take us to Thowadra Monastery, meaning 'highest rock'. Reaching an altitude of 3400m, we will enjoy a well-earned picnic lunch.

Tang Valley - Punakha (1200m)

Day 9

Our long drive today will take us via Trongsa - home to a magnificently located dzong, to the old capital of Punakha.

Day 10

We take a beautiful walk this morning to a revered chorten and then visit the stunningly located dzong in the old capital.

Punakha - Paro (2500m)

Day 11

Leaving Punakha behind we head back to Paro for an afternoon visit to 'the fortress of the heap of jewels' otherwise known as Paro Dzong.

In Paro

Day 12

Today we take a walk to visit the iconic Tiger's Nest Monastery which hangs in the rocks above the valley, and later explore the town.

Tour ends in Paro

Day 13

The tour ends this morning in Paro. Depending on your flight departure time, there may be some time for some last-minute souvenir shopping before transferring to the airport.
