Day 6 El CALAFATE

This morning’s shared excursion sees you travelling to a unique spot in Los Glaciares National Park at the remote Estancia Cristina, founded in 1941. The trip includes crossing the lake in a boat to reach the estancia which is located a few kilometres from the Upsala glacier, one of Los Glaciares National Park’s most cherished assets. Upon arriving at the lodge, the tour starts with a visit to the museum and old shearing shed where to learn about its history. Then, walk through a historical part of the estancia to begin a short, guided walk up to the Caterina River and the chapel where you can enjoy a picnic prepared by the estancia’s kitchen. After lunch, the small group will jump in 4x4s to head to the refuge of continental ice travelling through a mountain trail that, until recently, was covered by glaciers. The walk from the refuge takes about 20 minutes over eroded terrain to reach the Upsala Glacier viewpoint where you can see the eastern front of the glacier, Lake William, the Patagonian ice field and the Andes range. After some time here, backtrack to the estancia via 4x4 and then to your hotel in El Calafate across the lake.

Although the Brazilian side doesn’t have the extensive network of trails that the Argentinian side boasts, it is blessed with best views of the falls and is perfect for a relaxed stroll stopping to take pictures. From these short walkways you can admire panoramic views of the Devil’s Throat and the majority of the falls’ highlights as well the chance to feel the water’s spray from the boardwalk that protrudes out onto the Brazilian side of the falls.
