Scientific research in Antarctica has typically been in basic research institutes and research vessel icebreakers, however, now you can contribute to whale research in comfort and style on the Hebridean Sky. In partnership with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, this unique voyage will see you travelling with an entire team of scientists, engaged in a major study of Humpback Whale feeding habits.
Krill is the backbone of Antarctic wildlife and is the reason why Humpback whales migrate to these icy waters from Australia, 5000km on average. Not much is known about how Humpback whales feed on Antarctic krill. The aim of this expedition is to gather data and tag whales, so that we can better understand their feeding patterns and how they may be altered due to climate change. Other whales of interest include Orcas, Southern Right whales and Minke.
There will be a panel discussion from the WHOI Team, whale expert Annette Bombosch, PhD and Peter Neill, the founding Director of the World Ocean Observatory. Although science is the main focus, you will still enjoy activities and excursions of normal Antarctic expeditions this time of year including lectures, citizen science, zodiac safaris, camping, shore landings and kayaking.
