The calm before the storm, JB in Turkey

15th June 2009

This is always the part I enjoy most about my job; having flown to Turkey a day before the group, that chilled time pottering around before the clients come and the questions start. Of course in this situation I don't have a lot to worry about. I am not guiding or even tour leading; Mike Belton, a fine man that has lived here with his wife for 20 years, is doing that. But still it's nice after a busy few weeks in London to be sitting en seul looking out over the clear waters of the Mediterranean, enjoying my first Turkish coffee, relaxing. So Turkey and the Med I hear you say, is that a Wild Frontier? The truth is I am not sure and that's why I'm here, to find out. I have raced through Turkey on journeys home from the East on a couple of occasions, and I've spent a lot of time in Istanbul, a city I love. But the heartland is somewhere I have never spent time, so I wanted to check it out and see if it’s a place we should be offering. Opinion in the office is divided. Some say it’s too overrun with Russians, others that there are wonderful secret places worthy of our trips. So Mike has set up a walking tour for us, into the mountains behind Antalya, with homestays, hidden lakes and remote Roman temples to entertain us. One thing to bear in mind is that this is our only trip now selling below a grand, which has to be worth something these days. And if the cute, narrow streets of the old town, with the needle-sharp minarets and pretty bougainvillea, are anything to go by, I have a feeling it will deliver. So watch out for the next update as we leave the sea and head up into the hills...
