Tour leader Hilary Napier is live blogging from our Kyrgyzstan Explorer tour.
Replete with pancakes, maize kasha, omelettes and homemade raspberry jam, we set out to walk the seven lakes of Sary Chelek. We passed through alpine meadows with white stem-roses, potentilla and other yellow flowers that gave the lake its name: yellow bucket.
Lunch by the lake after a refreshing swim in the turquoise water. We listened to tales of stone throwing bears from our host and guide, Baban. Our homeward trail was intercepted by small boys cantering uphill on sleek horses to gather small rolls of hay that they rushed downhill at breakneck speed. Ridiculously laden trucks passed us too, their windscreens all but obscured by hay.
Dinner was the national dish, Bishbarmek or Five Fingers (a tasty soup) washed down with Kyrgyzstan vodka of the same name.
