Impressive Sunset Spots Around the World

We all know the scene: a long day exploring somewhere new and fascinating, perhaps in a busy city or scaling a challenging peak, then you find a moment of calm away from the bustle, or a perfect plateau that offers the most breathtaking moment – a sunset that feels like it was sent to soothe your soul. From vistas and towering feats of architecture to the serenity of the desert – check out our round-up of the coolest (or hottest) places to watch night fall and colours paint the sky….

TANZANIA- Tarangire National Park

Experience a picturesque sunset from the top of a large granite rock in a remote area of Tarangire National Park. At Maweninga Camp, you can enjoy serene views of the savannah, Lake Manyara, and the Rift Valley from wooden decks. Relax, dine, and sip drinks while watching the sun set from the beautiful wooden, makuti-roof restaurant and bar. Afterwards, gather around the campfire to hear Maasai stories.

BOLIVIA - Uyuni Salt Flats

At 10,582 square km, Salar de Uyuni or Uyuni Salt Flats is the largest salt flat in the world. While photographers gather here for epic reflective photos or shots of flamingos gathering under the sun, it also offers one of the most peaceful and mesmerising sunsets.
Our Latin America expert, Richard, recommends visiting during the dry season to camp in an old-school Airstream camper with your own chef and mountain bikes; it also acts as the perfect base to watch the sunset over the flats and gives way to an impressive sky sparkling with stars.

CAMBODIA - Angkor Wat

The Angkor Wat complex covers 400 square km and is filled with mysterious temples, terraces and moats, monkeys and jungle. It faces west to the setting sun, rather than the more usual east for Hindu sites. That makes it perfectly aligned for both sunsets and sunrises.

After a day spent biking around the lesser-known ancient temples of Angkor and admiring the intricate stone carvings and twisting trees, settle down to watch as the sun sets in a beautiful and mystical setting.

Kenny, from our sales team, recommends Ta Prohm temple, where the lower light casts a golden glow and offers an unforgettable, magical experience.

Did you know that sunsets are great for your mental health? Research suggests that exposure to nature, especially natural light, can reduce stress and anxiety levels. It’s also great for improved sleep quality as it helps regulate your circadian rhythm, signalling to your body it’s nearly time to sleep.

UZBEKISTAN – Registan Square, Samarkand

Explore Samarkand's most impressive sight, Registan Square. Surrounded on three sides by blue-tiled madrassahs, it is a masterpiece of Islamic architecture.

You can view the sunset from the Registan viewing platform or settle down for an early dinner at one of the restaurants surrounding it. The warm skies over the square radiate off the ancient buildings, making the mesmerising mosaics glisten. We also highly recommend watching the Registan Square light show at night for a memorable evening spectacle.

THAILAND - Bangkok

Our resident Southeast Asia pro, Jim, recommends a spot in downtown Bangkok that acts as an oasis of calm overlooking the Grand Palace: the Eagle's Nest Bar.
Eagle Nest is a hidden gem with a stunning view facing Wat Arun Temple & Chao Phraya River. You can also see the Reclining Buddha Temple (Wat Pho) and four large stupas with impressive 360-degree views.

Tip: You cannot make a reservation, so get in early before sunset to get the best view!

SAUDI ARABIA - AlUla

A desert sunset offers serenity and a moment for reflective peace. Naturally carved over several millennia, the AlUla Elephant Rock (Jabal AlFil ) in Saudi Arabia is an incredible spot to watch the dunes glow and the sun’s rays cast through the rock, creating a dazzling sun show.
Position yourself in front of Elephant Rock with the sun behind it for the best view, and have your camera ready to capture the spectacular moment the sun aligns perfectly with the rock formation!

Honourable Mention - JAPAN - Tokyo

Twice a year, when the sun sets right behind the peak of Mount Fuji, for the brief moment that it lingers at the pinnacle, it gives the appearance of a sparkling diamond. If you’re lucky, you might be able to snap a good photo from the Tokyo City View observation deck in Roppongi Hills, where you’ll also find a restaurant and bar to keep you busy if you’re not so lucky. But Diamond Fuji aside, on a clear Tokyo evening, any sunset alongside this iconic mountain still feels rather special.
