Aleksandr

Aleksandr was born in Kyrgyzstan into a family of Russian migrants. His great grandmother moved to Bishkek in 1949 after WWII. During his childhood he had many sporting interests such as football, basketball and swimming, which took up the majority of his free time. However, Aleksandr never imagined his career to be in sport, and instead decided to study history at university. Aleksandr led summer camps for children at the Issyk Kul Lake where he took on many roles such as lifeguard and gymnastics instructor. He also spent four months working and traveling in the USA, where Aleksandr learnt the English language.

Soon after graduating from Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University, Aleksandr began working in tourism. He currently leads many different types of tours, which include visits to museums, nature walks along the canyon and trekking in high-altitude.

Interview

Q: How did you fall into tour leading?

A: It’s a funny story! When one of my colleagues retired from guiding he was looking for someone to replace him. I agreed to take over with no previous experience. I was scared as hell, but my crazy self said yes!

Q: What do you like most about tour leading?

A: I love my country. It’s incredibly beautiful and I’m always happy to show it off to everybody. Travelling with tourists I constantly hear “Wow”, “Jeez”, “Oh My God”, “This is Unbelievable” which makes me really happy.

Q: Where is your favourite part of the world?

A: I like to be in Kyrgyzstan. Even though I am Russian, I still feel like I am at home… Oh and I really like Italy too!

Q: What was your biggest travel highlight?

A: My biggest travel highlight is when I was 1km away from the launching rocket at Baikonur. This is something that everybody should see, and feel!

Q: What’s the craziest request you've ever had from a client?

A: To organize a trip around Kyrgyzstan on helicopter.

Q: What’s the one thing you couldn't travel without?

A: My phone, I think. It is the ultimate weapon of control!

Q: Which famous person would you most like to travel with?

A: I’ve already travelled with Matt Leblanc!
