Sonam

Sonam

Sonam was born in 1983 in Bumthang Ura, a village he refers to as the "hidden paradise" of a great master called Guru Rinpoche. He finished high school in 2003 and in 2004 began his career as an Olympic Archer in Bhutan's national team until 2008. Sonam travelled to lots of different countries for international tournaments. After just missing out on qualifying for the Beijing Olympics in 2008 he completed a tour guiding course and began leading groups. Sonam loves nature, mountains, hiking, off-road mountain biking, photography, people, cultures and traditions.

Interview

Q: How did you fall into tour leading?

A: After finishing my career in archery I was unsure what I was going to do as I had little experience and job training. I would say that guiding as a career was given to me by god, as I was able to train and was given new opportunities.

Q: What do you like most about tour leading?

A: Experiencing, learning and exploring.

Q: What has been your biggest travel highlight?

A: Bhutan's Tiger Nest Monastery.

Q: What's the craziest request you've ever had from a client?

A: To extract leaches from a client's private parts.

Q: What's the one thing you couldn't travel without?

A: My mobile phone!

Q: Which famous person would you like to travel with?

A: Bear Grylls!

Q: Have you ever made a cultural faux pas?

A: I had an interesting experience when having lunch with one guest. I was using a knife and fork to cut some meat and suddenly my meat jumped onto one of the guests’ plates!
