This unique tour is a must-do for anyone visiting Mumbai, as you get to explore the underbelly of this magnificent city and gain a better insight into who and what makes it tick. Starting before sunrise, we will witness the fisherfolk hard at work at the docks as the fresh catch is brought in, before continuing on to see hundreds of illiterate vendors sort through the different newspapers which are then distributed across the city. From here we visit a number of morning markets, including the colourful and fragrant flower market, which is always a highlight. These early hours of the day provide a fascinating insight into the communities and cultures of Mumbai and offer a wonderful contrast to the usual touring experiences. After breakfast and a rest, this afternoon we will then take a walking tour of the Dharavi slum, the heart of small-scale industry in Mumbai. As we wander through 'India's largest slum' we will witness a wide range of business enterprises and activities, from recycling and pottery-making, to embroidery and leather tanning. People from all over India live in Dharavi, making it a cultural melting pot, and a tour through its narrow alleys is quite an adventure. More recently Dharavi has become a focus of artists from all over the world, who in collaboration with the locals have painted murals on the walls of houses, and as we explore Dharavi it’s worth looking out for the abundant street art which the local community is very proud of. Days 30 - 31 Munnar - Alleppey (Backwaters)

This morning we drive to Alleppey to take to the waters of this most beautiful and unique of landscapes. Boarding our traditional houseboats, we will spend the next two days cruising the waterways and channels that honeycomb the coastal plains running parallel to the Arabian Sea. A unique ecosystem that is home to a rich variety of aquatic life, the backwaters present us with a time-honoured image of an India long forgotten, where scattered villages survive amongst the labyrinthine channels much as they have for generations. Kettuvallams (Keralan houseboats) once negotiated these canals carrying rice, grain and even royalty through the backwaters. Today they provide us with an ideal way to appreciate the tranquillity and tradition of this part of southern India. We’ll pass isolated communities and gardens of hibiscus and vegetables, hop off the boats to visit interesting sights en route, and spend our evenings moored up besides the lapping shores of these idyllic backwaters. Having two nights aboard our private chartered houseboats enables us to venture further into the backwaters to catch a glimpse of life rarely seen by foreign visitors to Kerala.

The goal of the company is to empower these local women, breaking the stereotype of a woman’s role in India, by providing them with the opportunity to develop a career in what would ordinarily be a very competitive and male-dominant industry, and drastically improving their livelihoods.  All the rickshaws are electric, taking a big step to help fight India’s pollution problems.  This modest tour offers the perfect opportunity to respectfully observe daily life whilst also supporting a forward-thinking, eco-friendly form of tourism that also strives to empower women in the area.

Wild Frontiers, through our foundation, have funded the purchase of two new electric rickshaws and trained five local ladies to be driver/guides. Continuing our support of the project and its sustainability, on this tour we enjoy a rickshaw tour with the Pink City Rickshaw Company through the backstreets of Jaipur.

Sheroes Hangout Cafe

On this tour we support the women of Sheroes Hangout Café, who have been victims of acid attacks and are fighting to stop acid attacks in India. The café is empowering the women to build up their confidence and skillset so they can improve their livelihoods and feel a sense of belonging again, and so we can enjoy lunch here and discover some of the women’s brave stories.

Mughal Heritage Walk

We will get the chance to discover the farming community of Kachhpura as we embark on a Mughal heritage walk, led by a USAID-trained specialist guide. USAID is an NGO striving to create sustainable livelihoods for women and lower-class youth in Agra, and this walk through Kachhpura village will give us a unique insight into this local community and culture whilst providing some financial support. The walk then ends with refreshments on the rooftop of a local home, offering stunning views of the Taj Mahal in the far distance.

Dastkar Ranthambore

Dastkar Ranthambore is a non-profit organization founded in 1989 in an effort to provide much needed income to the villagers who had been displaced by the creation of the tiger reserve. Dastkar, which means artisan in Hindi, produce handicrafts made by local villagers, particularly women, from an area around the Ranthambore National Park. Working with more than 300 families, Dastkar provide a steady source of income in a region where the wages are low and available employment is seasonal. On this tour you will have the opportunity to gain an insight into Dastkar and learn how the women and their family’s lives have been transformed by the self-help initiative.

Reducing Single Use Plastic

We recognise the environmental issues and challenges around single-use plastic in many countries we visit and are actively working with our partners on the ground to reduce plastic waste on our tours and within the hotels and restaurants we visit. You can help to reduce your personal plastic waste by taking a refillable, filtered water bottle with you on your trip. Filtered water bottles can be refilled from water sources including your hotel room and restaurant taps, drinking fountains and refill stations. Every time you refill your bottle without the use of single-use plastic, you will be helping to reduce waste and protect the environment. Key Information

CLIMATE

The temperature in the north should be very pleasant at this time of year, with a daytime average of around 25-30C dropping in the evening to around 10-15C. Some warm clothes are advised for the early morning and evening activities. Travelling in central India at this time of year will be warm to hot, though the nights may be chilly. IS THIS TRIP FOR ME?

It may sound obvious but Wild Frontiers tours are not always for everyone and it is important to us that the tour you choose is the most suitable. All our tours have a fitness rating as a guideline but you should check the day-by-day itinerary carefully. In certain instances we may ask you to complete a travel questionnaire before confirming your booking in order to ensure your suitability. Should you have any concerns about your ability to partake in any aspect of the tour then please contact the office.

KEY ASPECTS TO CONSIDER

Anyone in a reasonable state of health, with an open mind and a sense of adventure should be perfectly able to cope with this tour, however, please note the tour does include two overnight trains which will require you to share a cabin and the journey can be quite bumpy!

NEW TOURS

Never complacent, here at Wild Frontiers we are continually on the look-out for new tour ideas. Each year we aim to put on a selection of new tours in order to continually provide our clients with a fresh and varied choice of some of the best journeys on the planet. Although a lot of fun, these tours will often involve a greater element of unpredictability than our better-established tours, so please come prepared.

TRAVELLING SOLO AND SINGLE SUPPLEMENTS

As a company approximately 70% of our clients are solo travellers, so it’s very unlikely you’ll be alone!

Our prices are typically based on twin-share accommodation but single supplements are not compulsory for any Wild Frontiers tour. If you prefer not to pay a single supplement we’ll pair you with someone else of the same sex for you to share with throughout the trip. On this trip, if you do opt to pay for a single supplement then please note that it will cover you for all nights of the tour apart from the overnight trains when you will need to share a cabin with three other passengers.

Please note that paying a single supplement entitles you to lone occupancy of a single room. In many cases these rooms will be of the same size as a double/twin room, but in some cases they may be smaller.

INSURANCE

Insurance that provides cover for emergency repatriation in case of a medical emergency is compulsory for all tours. You should be aware that due to some of the geographical areas visited and some of the activities included on certain of our trips some standard insurance policies may not always provide adequate cover. As such we strongly recommend that you purchase a policy that adequately covers your trip. Please see the Insurance section for more details.
