Originally built in 1989 as a research vessel for Russia's Academy of Science, the Akademic Ioffe is now a luxury cruise ship used for exploring the Polar Regions. The ice-breaker is fully equipped for Polar discovery with zodiacs, kayaks and camping gear on board. Akademik Ioffe carries a maximum of just 96 guests so that time ashore is not compromised. When guests return from their excursions they have the option of relaxing in the dining room, bar, library or lounge area. After a long day in the Arctic/Antarctic, guests prefer nothing more than to unwind in the hot water spa, sauna and massage room. Guests can stay in six cabin categories, ranging from semi-private rooms to luxurious Suites. All categories feature a window, writing desk, chair and storage and guests can choose from private to semi-private options. Twin semi-private cabins share bathroom facilities with the adjacent cabin but also feature a bookshelf and convertible sofa bed. Triple cabins feature bunk beds, shared bathroom, portholes and a washbasin in the cabin. Upgrade to The Shackleton Suites, two lavish and spacious rooms have the added luxury of a private bathroom, upgraded linens, capsule coffee maker, mini stereo, mini bar and iPod loaded with region specific material. The One Ocean Suite tops it all off with an additional bathtub, armchairs and large, forward facing picture windows. At the end of your journey, make sure to buy any last minute souvenirs at the gift shop.
